Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu makes a persuasive case for being one of 2024’s best horror films—not because it chases a steady stream of shocks, but because its oppressive atmosphere, carefully composed images and sound, and focus on Ellen Hutter’s experience make the vampire story feel both repulsive and seductive. That judgment is subjective: the deliberate pace, stylized dialogue and graphic content will be a poor fit for some viewers.
What is Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu about?
Written and directed by Eggers, Nosferatu is a gothic horror film released in the United States on December 25, 2024. Its central story is an obsession: a haunted young woman, Ellen Hutter, is drawn into the orbit of the vampire who is infatuated with her. The film’s official synopsis puts that relationship at the center rather than treating the vampire as the only point of interest. Focus Features’ film page lists Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen and Bill Skarsgård among the principal cast, alongside Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney and Willem Dafoe.
That emphasis on Ellen shapes the film’s appeal. The vampire’s menace matters, but so does the way obsession presses into her life and perception. Viewers looking for a brisk monster adventure may find the film’s sustained, heightened mood less inviting than those who enjoy horror built around dread and fixation.
What makes the film stand out?
Atmosphere over constant shocks
The strongest case for Nosferatu as a year-best horror film is its command of atmosphere. The imagery is shadow-heavy and deliberately unsettling; the sound design and Robin Carolan’s music contribute to a low, ominous sense of pressure rather than simply announcing each scare. The result is a world that feels bleak and inhospitable. The film’s horror works as much through what its images and sounds make you anticipate as through moments of explicit violence.

Craft with a coherent gothic sensibility
The visual and sonic choices belong to a larger design. Jarin Blaschke is credited with cinematography, Craig Lathrop with production design and Linda Muir with costume design in the Universal Pictures Home Entertainment release information. Those credits help explain the film’s unified look without reducing it to a list of technical accomplishments: its settings, costumes, lighting and sound all support the same forbidding mood.
Lily-Rose Depp’s performance and Ellen’s point of view
Depp’s performance is central to the film’s emotional pull. The audience blurb on Rotten Tomatoes singles out the atmosphere intensified by her work, while the story itself gives Ellen a role beyond that of a target for the vampire’s desire. That perspective keeps the film’s obsession from becoming merely a showcase for its monster.

Is Nosferatu scary, and how graphic is it?
It is a horror film with strong, sustained dread, but it is not designed to deliver the same kind of scare at every turn. Its slow-building atmosphere may be more effective for viewers who respond to unease and disturbing imagery than for people who want frequent jolts. The audience comment on Rotten Tomatoes also suggests that its atmosphere may land more consistently than its scares.
It is also graphic. In the United States, the distributor lists an R rating for “bloody violent content, graphic nudity and some sexual content.” In the United Kingdom, the BBFC’s cinema classification advises strong horror, injury detail, violence and sex, and describes bloody violence, sexual content and nudity. These are separate national classification systems, but both signal that this is not a mild or family-oriented vampire film. The BBFC’s classification page provides its detailed UK content advice.
Who is likely to enjoy it—and who may not?
- Good fit: viewers who value gothic atmosphere, formal visual craft, unnerving sound and stories about obsession.
- Less suitable: viewers who prefer fast pacing, naturalistic dialogue, frequent conventional scares or limited graphic content.
- Worth knowing beforehand: the film includes bloody violence, horror, nudity and sexual content; consult the classification guidance if those details affect your viewing choice.
Eggers’ stylized dialogue and deliberate pacing are part of the film’s heightened mode, but they can also create distance. If you need a horror film to move quickly or feel conversationally natural, the same qualities that give Nosferatu its distinctive gothic character may become obstacles.
Does the extended cut add anything?
The US home-entertainment release includes both the theatrical cut and an extended cut, along with deleted scenes and a Robert Eggers commentary, according to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The listed runtimes for the 4K UHD and Blu-ray editions are:

| Theatrical | 2:12:17 |
| Extended | 2:15:45 |
The extended cut runs 3 minutes and 28 seconds longer by those listed runtimes. The release announcement confirms that it is a distinct cut not seen in theaters, but does not describe the added material in detail; runtime alone cannot establish how substantially it changes the film. If you already know you want to revisit Eggers’ version, the Nosferatu 4K UHD or Blu-ray release is the option that lists both cuts and those extras. Confirm the contents and playback compatibility of the specific edition and territory before buying.
Universal said the film became available digitally on January 21, 2025, with 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD editions following on February 18, 2025. Those are the distributor’s US release dates, not a guarantee of current availability in every country or service.
How has Nosferatu been received?
The reception snapshot available on Rotten Tomatoes when accessed in 2026 showed an 85% Tomatometer from 383 critic reviews and a 73% Popcornmeter from more than 10,000 verified ratings. These scores can change and represent one aggregator’s ratings, not a definitive ranking of the year’s horror films. The critics’ consensus describes the movie as “a behemoth of a horror film that is equal parts repulsive and seductive,” which captures its mix of formal control and confrontational content. Rotten Tomatoes’ page also makes clear that audience response is positive overall, though not as strong as the critics’ score in that snapshot.
Verdict: is it the best horror movie of 2024?
Calling Nosferatu the best horror movie of 2024 is a defensible critical opinion, not an objective fact. Its strongest argument is the combination of Eggers’ sustained gothic atmosphere, carefully coordinated craft and a story that gives Ellen’s experience real weight. Its deliberate pace and graphic horror narrow its audience, and viewers seeking more conventional scares may come away less impressed. For viewers drawn to oppressive, visually controlled gothic horror, it is a standout—and a plausible choice for the year’s best.
