Jurassic World Rebirth is a new-cast entry in the dinosaur franchise, led by Scarlett Johansson and built around an extraction mission to an island research facility tied to the original Jurassic Park. Johansson has described the film as a standalone story intended to welcome newcomers—not as a guaranteed rescue for the franchise. Here are seven useful things to know, including its premise, creative team, early box-office reports, and home formats.
1. The story returns to a location connected to the original film
In Universal’s official synopsis, an extraction team heads to an island research facility associated with the original Jurassic Park. Dinosaurs remain there, turning the assignment into a dangerous mission. That setup reconnects the new story to the franchise’s beginnings without making it a retelling of the 1993 film. Universal’s official film page provides the synopsis and credits.
2. Scarlett Johansson leads an ensemble cast
Universal highlights Johansson alongside Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali. The official film materials also name Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein. Johansson is the headline star, but the extraction-team premise makes this an ensemble adventure.
3. A returning writer teamed up with a new director
David Koepp, screenwriter of the original Jurassic Park, wrote Rebirth. Gareth Edwards directed. Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley produced, and Steven Spielberg served as executive producer, according to the official credits. The combination gives the film a direct link to the series’ early creative history while placing it under a different director.

4. “A new direction” is the studio’s framing
NBCUniversal described the film as a sequel with the vibe and style of the 1990s original, presenting it as a new direction for the series. That is the studio’s positioning, not a settled critical consensus. The premise and creative credits show how the film connects to the franchise; whether its approach feels fresh is a matter of the film’s reception and each viewer’s experience.
5. Johansson said the film was meant to work as a standalone entry
In an interview reported by GamesRadar, Johansson said the filmmakers wanted to establish the movie as “its own contained, standalone thing.” She also expressed the hope that new viewers could use it as an entry point. That is her perspective on the film’s design, not a promise that no prior franchise knowledge will help. The setup is understandable on its own, while the island’s link to the original story gives longtime viewers a familiar connection.

6. Its opening figures and reception reports depend on the date and source
The opening-period numbers published in July 2025 were not identical snapshots. NBCUniversal reported a $322.6 million global opening. The Associated Press, in a report published Sunday, July 6, gave a $318.3 million five-day global estimate. These are separate reports from different publishers, not a current lifetime gross or evidence that one figure is the film’s final total.
The AP report also captured early reception at that moment: it cited a 51% Rotten Tomatoes score and a B CinemaScore. Those dated indicators describe the opening-period snapshot; they should not be read as current scores or as a complete account of audience and critical response. In the same AP report, Universal domestic distribution chief Jim Orr called the film “exactly what audiences crave during the summer”—a studio executive’s assessment, rather than independent consensus.

7. The film is available in confirmed home-entertainment formats
Universal’s home-entertainment announcement listed digital availability before physical editions of 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 9, 2025. The announcement establishes those formats and the dated physical release; it does not establish current streaming-service availability, retailer stock, or prices. Check an official service or retailer for what is currently available in your region.
