Its animal transformation gives those feelings an inventive, sometimes unsettling form, though the film’s uneven storytelling and insistence on its message may leave some viewers wanting more subtlety.
What is Nightbitch about?
Adams plays a woman identified as Mother, who pauses her career to stay home with her child. As domestic life wears her down, it takes a surreal turn: she begins to experience herself changing into a dog. The transformation belongs to the film’s fantasy premise, not a realistic account of a medical condition.
The setup makes caregiving’s isolation, bodily strain and loss of professional identity visible through animal imagery. The film does not treat Mother’s anger as a tidy problem to solve; it turns it into part of the story’s unruly, comic and occasionally grotesque texture.
Why Amy Adams stands out
Adams is the film’s most commanding element. She commits physically as well as emotionally, carrying the character’s fatigue, frustration and growing strangeness without making Mother easy to reduce to a single feeling. The Associated Press called her performance “brave” and “mesmerizing,” while Variety described it as “ferocious.” Those are the outlets’ judgments, but both point to how much force Adams brings to the role.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That intensity also sharpens a weakness in the film around her: at times, Adams’s performance feels more coherent than the story built to contain it. Her work is compelling even when the film’s shifts in tone and plot are less sure-footed.
Comedy, fantasy and body horror
Nightbitch moves between satire, comic absurdity and body-horror imagery. The dog transformation gives Heller a way to dramatize a mother’s physical and emotional upheaval, rather than offering a literal explanation for it. The result can be funny, uncomfortable or both, sometimes in quick succession.

The tonal mixture is central to the film’s approach, but it will not suit every viewer. The surreal comedy gives the story room to express feelings that a conventional domestic drama might smooth over; the grotesque moments make that expression harder to watch. The film’s point is less restrained than its premise might suggest.
Where the film is less successful
The reviews consulted are not unreserved praise. The AP found the script frustratingly odd, describing early scenes as impactful before the later story gives way to confused havoc. Variety found the film entertaining but argued that its plot is narrowly restricted and that its narration can spell out the argument too plainly.

Those reservations help explain the gap between Adams’s achievement and the film’s overall effect. Nightbitch has an arresting way to embody maternal exhaustion, but its repetitions and uneven construction can blunt the force of that idea. Viewers who want ambiguity or a wider-ranging portrait of parenthood may find it too insistent.
Is Nightbitch based on a book?
Yes. Writer-director Marielle Heller adapted the film from Rachel Yoder’s 2021 novel, also titled Nightbitch. The film’s central premise and its dog imagery are part of a story associated with Yoder’s book; the sources cited here do not establish specific changes between the novel and the adaptation.

Who should watch it?
The film is a strong choice for viewers interested in Amy Adams, surreal storytelling or stories that treat maternal anger and lost identity as subjects worth confronting rather than softening. Its blend of satire and body horror is a less natural fit for anyone looking for a conventional, realistic family drama.
The AP review reports an R rating for language and some sexuality. That is not a complete content advisory.
