The Season 1 finale of NCIS: Origins leaves Lala’s fate unresolved. Austin Stowell said he did not know whether she survived the crash, while co-showrunner David J. North declined to confirm that she was dead. Stowell also explained why Gibbs tells Lala the truth instead of kissing her—and described Diane’s arrival as a small spark, not an instant romance.
Is Lala dead at the end of the NCIS: Origins finale?
The finale, “Cecilia,” ends with Lala in a devastating car wreck after she puts herself in danger amid the fallout from Lara Macy’s investigation into Pedro Hernandez’s murder. The episode presents a life-threatening cliffhanger, but it does not confirm that Lala dies.
In an April 28, 2025 interview with TVLine, co-showrunner David J. North said, “I won’t officially say that Lala is dead.” Co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal said the writers chose an accidental crash rather than a line-of-duty death because it felt more relatable and could send shock waves through Lala’s circle. North said the uncertainty gave the series room to take a big swing.
Stowell was also left without an answer while filming. In a separate TV Insider interview, he said, “Truth be told, I don’t know. We are all being kept in the dark.” He described the finale scene as withheld from the scripts the cast first received. That was the actor’s knowledge at the time of the interview, not a confirmation of what happened to Lala.

Stowell speculated that losing Lala could become another loss Gibbs carries and make him withdraw further, but he also raised the possibility that Gibbs might find her. He said the immediate question was whether she was alive, rather than what the crash meant for the romance.
Why doesn’t Gibbs kiss Lala in the pool?
The pool scene gives Gibbs and Lala a moment of closeness, but Gibbs uses it to tell her that he turned over his rifle. Stowell interpreted the choice as an act of care: Gibbs believes Lala should know the truth, especially when it could change how she sees him.

Monreal confirmed that the writers discussed whether the pair should kiss. She said Gibbs had important news to share, and “it wouldn’t have been a truthful moment if he had let that happen without sharing that news with her.” The scene advances their relationship through honesty while leaving the romantic outcome open.
Who is Diane, and what does her arrival mean?
Diane appears as a real-estate agent visiting Gibbs while he is putting his house on the market and dealing with a painful transition. Stowell said her warmth gets Gibbs to respond and show her around. He described what comes through in the scene as “the littlest sparks,” adding, “There’s at least that much.” His reading is of a tentative connection breaking through Gibbs’s despair, not an immediate romance.

Monreal said the writers knew from established NCIS canon that Diane and Gibbs marry, so they wanted to introduce her. In the same 2025 TV Insider interview, she said Diane would have a presence in Season 2, without specifying how large a role. Her introduction points toward a consequential relationship, but it does not mean Gibbs has moved on from Lala in the finale.

- Lala’s fate: The crash is a cliffhanger; the cited interviews do not confirm her death.
- Gibbs and Lala: They do not kiss in the pool. Gibbs chooses to disclose the truth about his rifle.
- Diane: The finale introduces her as a possible future presence, with the relationship’s significance shaped by established NCIS canon.
North said the series began with the idea of telling a Gibbs love story. The finale therefore leaves two different questions in play: what happens to Lala after the crash, and how Gibbs’s relationships develop from there. The interviews published on April 28, 2025 establish the creators’ intentions at that point; they are not a substitute for any later episodes.
