In NCIS season 22, episode 17, “Killer Instinct,” the captured hitman known as the Poet dies before the team can question him, but his client’s plan is still in motion. The investigation reveals a second assassin: Lauren McKnight, whose attack on Atlas security chief Gabriel LaRoche is stopped by a vest and a staged shooting. The episode closes with the immediate case solved but the wider mystery involving Atlas, the Nexus cartel, Carla Marino and Nocturne still unresolved.
How the Poet case begins
The team opens by capturing Paul Morton, the hitman called the Poet, in connection with the killing of Lt. Commander Willis and a planned attack on another Navy officer. Before investigators can get answers from him, the Poet breaks glass capsules implanted in his body. Their two-part chemical mechanism kills him, turning the case toward the people who hired him and the target he had not yet reached.
The next intended victim had served with Willis on the Atlas, a Navy security detail for a Department of Energy train carrying spent nuclear fuel. Sara Netzley’s recap describes the train’s security this way: “The Navy provides security for the Department of Energy’s top-secret train that ferries spent nuclear fuel to an undisclosed location twice a year.” That is the episode’s account of the Atlas operation, not independently verified information about real-world train logistics.
Who is the second assassin?
The Poet’s broker is Gemma Wood, a jeweler whose shop provides a route into the client’s network. Torres goes undercover as the dead hitman to draw out Gemma’s customers. One customer, Lauren McKnight, wears a conspicuous beret and buys a diamond necklace. She also appears to sell an engagement ring connected to her supposed wedding to Torres—a cover story that makes the staged romance part of the operation.

Gemma eventually tells the team that the anonymous client has hired another assassin to eliminate everyone involved. That assassin is McKnight. The necklace and engagement-ring business are misdirection around a much more direct threat: she is preparing to kill the people investigating the Poet.
What is the Atlas train, and why does LaRoche matter?
Atlas is the security detail assigned to the Department of Energy train in the episode’s story. A photograph of LaRoche in Gemma’s safe points the team toward a connection they do not initially understand. They later learn that LaRoche is in charge of Atlas security—a role even Director Vance had not known about.

Their mutual surveillance turns the case into a personal and professional standoff, without clarifying how LaRoche fits into the larger conspiracy.

The plan works, but it carries an obvious risk: McGee has warned LaRoche that he is onto him by involving him in a staged attempt on his life. As Netzley’s recap puts the reader’s question, “why, oh, why would you tell the person you’re onto that you are, in fact, onto them?” The episode offers no immediate resolution to the distrust between the two men.
What “Killer Instinct” leaves unresolved
McKnight is caught and the Poet’s immediate case is closed, but the episode connects that case to a larger thread without explaining the full relationship. Gemma says the anonymous client had a Nexus tattoo. The team has also encountered Carla Marino, the Nexus cartel, the Atlas security detail and the Nocturne note, but “Killer Instinct” does not establish how those pieces fit together.
