My Undesirable Friends: Part I — Last Air in Moscow follows independent Russian journalists as state pressure and Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine reshape their work and drive some into exile. Director Julia Loktev’s intimate, on-the-ground footage records a particular group of people and events; the film does not by itself offer a complete account of Russian politics or press freedom.
What the documentary shows
Loktev began filming in Moscow in October 2021, intending to make a film about journalists labeled “foreign agents.” The project changed when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. She filmed in Moscow during the invasion’s first week, as independent outlets were shut down and journalists fled.
The result follows journalists through a period when the conditions around their work shifted abruptly. Rather than presenting authoritarianism as an abstract definition or a comparative political analysis, the documentary stays close to the people affected by state pressure and the upheaval of the invasion. Argot Pictures, the distributor, describes it as “an immersive and intimate inside view of the opposition in an authoritarian society.” That is the distributor’s framing; the film’s documented focus is the journalists and the consequences they faced.
How Julia Loktev filmed it
Loktev filmed alone on an iPhone. The Taiwan International Documentary Festival catalogue quotes her saying she used an old iPhone X and borrowed a microphone. She explained the choice in terms of access and atmosphere: “Shooting alone on my phone created an incredible intimacy and immediacy that I would never have achieved with a larger camera or even one other crew member present.”

That is Loktev’s account of a production decision, not a general claim that phone cameras are better than larger setups. The small, solo approach mattered because it allowed her to remain close to the people she was filming as events unfolded. The same catalogue quotes her describing the project’s unexpected expansion: “What I thought was a week-long research trip turned into Chapter One of the film.”
Who made it, and how long is it?
My Undesirable Friends: Part I — Last Air in Moscow is a 2024 US documentary directed by Julia Loktev, with Anna Nemzer credited as co-director. It has five chapters and a distributor-listed running time of 324 minutes. Screenings have included intermissions. The film is in Russian with English subtitles.

Where to watch it
Availability varies by country and can change. As checked on October 5, 2026, MUBI’s US catalog lists chapters 1–3 and chapters 4–5 separately, while its UK and Sweden pages list chapters 1–3. Check your local MUBI catalog and confirm which chapters are included before starting; the distributor lists the complete five-chapter film at 324 minutes.
