What happens in the mid-credits scene?
After the main story’s resolution and Moana’s celebratory return, the film shifts to its antagonists. Nalo confronts Matangi, whose actions helped Moana. Tamatoa appears alongside them, adding a comic tag and bringing back a character from the first film.

The scene does not resolve Nalo’s conflict with Moana. Instead, it shows that he remains a possible threat and leaves Matangi’s position uncertain.
What does the scene mean for a possible sequel?
The scene leaves room for the story to continue: Nalo is still a threat, and Matangi’s relationship with him is unsettled. That is a possibility, not a promise. The credits scene does not confirm that Moana 3 or any other sequel will be made.

Why is the scene placed after Moana’s return?
Director David Derrick Jr. said the filmmakers wanted the main film to end on Moana’s triumphant return before shifting briefly to the villains and finishing with a laugh. He described the intended sequence this way: “And then, we realized that we wanted to actually go out on the most euphoric moment with Moana chasing the horizon with her entire crew. And then, give it a beat and then have a little bit of fun where we show kind of the dark edge of the villains. And then, have a little laugh at the end.” CinemaBlend’s interview with Derrick Jr. and director Jason Hand also describes Tamatoa’s return as both a character moment and a way to show Nalo.
