Michael is a 2026 biographical drama starring Michael Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson as the pop icon. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, it follows Jackson from his early days with the Jackson Five toward global stardom. Lionsgate announced a worldwide theatrical release beginning April 24, 2026; the film is now listed for U.S. streaming on STARZ, and a 4K collector’s edition is available from Lionsgate Limited.
What is Michael about?
Lionsgate describes the film as a story of Jackson’s life beyond the music, starting with the discovery of his talent as the lead of the Jackson Five and following his ambition to become the world’s biggest entertainer. The studio says it includes off-stage life and performances from his early solo career. That framing defines a particular part of Jackson’s story; it does not promise a complete account of his life.
Who plays Michael Jackson, and who else is in the cast?
Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, plays the adult Michael. The Lionsgate Limited cast listing also names Juliano Valdi as young Michael, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Colman Domingo as Joseph Jackson, Miles Teller as John Branca, Laura Harrier as Suzanne de Passe, and KeiLyn Durrel Jones as Bill Bray. STARZ lists additional cast members including Kendrick Sampson, Jamal Henderson, and Larenz Tate.
Antoine Fuqua directed the film, and John Logan wrote it. Lionsgate named Graham King, John Branca, and John McClain among the producers.

Michael was made with the Jackson estate’s involvement; The Associated Press reported that the estate co-produced the finished film. That matters when weighing the movie as a portrayal of a public figure: it is a dramatized, bounded story, not an independent or comprehensive account of every contested part of Jackson’s life.

Why the film’s scope changed
According to the AP’s April 26, 2026 report, an earlier version’s third act focused on accusations made by Jordan Chandler. The AP said a settlement term barred the Jackson estate from mentioning Chandler in a movie, leading the production to remove a substantial portion, fund reshoots through the estate, and revise the ending to 1988, before the accusations. The finished film therefore does not reach those later allegations.
The AP also reported a production cost approaching $200 million, opposition from some members of the Jackson family, Janet Jackson’s noninvolvement and absence from the film, and Paris Jackson’s description of it as “fantasy land.” These are AP-reported points about the production and family response, not a substitute for assessing the finished film itself.

Opening and early audience response
In its April 26, 2026 report, the AP gave studio estimates of a $97 million U.S. and Canada opening weekend and $217.4 million worldwide. Those are opening-weekend estimates, not final lifetime grosses. The same report cited a 38% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score and an A- CinemaScore audience grade at publication time; ratings can change.
Lionsgate separately said its teaser received 116.2 million global views in its first 24 hours, attributing that promotional figure to WaveMetrix and calling it the studio’s biggest 24-hour trailer debut. That is a studio-reported marketing metric, distinct from box-office results or audience reception.
