Robert Downey Jr. made his Broadway debut in Ayad Akhtar’s McNeal, a Lincoln Center Theater production that puts a celebrated novelist’s crisis of authorship alongside the rise of artificial intelligence. Critics often found Downey magnetic and the production visually striking; they were more divided about whether the play’s ideas and relationships add up to a convincing drama.
What is McNeal about?
Jacob McNeal is a celebrated novelist and perennial Nobel Prize candidate, but his public stature sits uneasily beside private grievances and an estranged son. As he works on a new novel, he becomes fascinated by AI and the questions it raises about originality, borrowing and who can claim authorship.
Lincoln Center Theater presented the play as an inquiry into the humanity—and increasing inhumanity—of the stories people tell. Its promotional line, “Good writers borrow, great writers steal,” points toward the central provocation: what happens to artistic self-image when machines can generate convincing language?
The play also invokes Shakespeare and King Lear in its argument about originality. That gives the debate a literary frame, but the critical question is whether the ideas become a human conflict rather than a sequence of arguments.

How did critics respond?
Reviews published on opening night, September 30, 2024, showed a tension between the production’s considerable surface appeal and doubts about its dramatic construction. These are individual critical judgments, not a universal verdict.
- Washington Post: Naveen Kumar opened with “Did AI write this?”—a pointed question about the play’s treatment of machine-generated work and authorship. Kumar praised the dazzling staging while finding the drama convoluted.
- Time Out: Adam Feldman wrote, “Ayad Akhtar’s McNeal is about artificial intelligence and, well, it has the artificial part down.” His review took issue with the credibility of the characters and situations, despite the play’s ambitious ideas.
- Los Angeles Times: Charles McNulty argued that the wealth of ideas overwhelms the human story, leaving the drama crowded rather than emotionally grounded.
- BroadwayWorld’s roundup: Selected reactions included praise for Downey’s charisma and magnetic presence, alongside criticism that the play’s ideas and human dynamics fail to cohere.
The disagreement is useful to a prospective reader: the production’s appeal may depend on whether Downey’s performance and the questions about AI sustain interest when the character relationships feel less persuasive.

What does Robert Downey Jr. bring to the role?
Downey’s Broadway debut was a major point of interest, and several critical responses singled out his charisma and stage presence. That praise does not mean critics found the character or the play fully realized. The recurring distinction is between the actor’s ability to command attention and the script’s ability to make McNeal’s personal and intellectual conflicts cohere.
How was the production staged?
Bartlett Sher directed the Lincoln Center Theater production at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. The Washington Post review described the staging as dazzling, while still criticizing the play as convoluted. That contrast captures an important part of the reception: visual ambition and dramatic clarity were not necessarily the same thing.

The production was a strictly limited 2024 engagement at Lincoln Center Theater’s Vivian Beaumont Theater. Those dates describe the completed engagement; they do not establish a revival or current ticket availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is McNeal worth seeing?
For viewers drawn to Downey’s stage debut or to drama that argues over AI, originality and artistic ownership, the production offered a high-profile performance and an unusually topical premise. The critical reservations are substantial, though: several reviewers felt the play’s ideas crowded out clear character dynamics and an emotionally convincing story. The best expectation is a provocative, debated work—not a uniformly acclaimed drama.
