Spoilers for the ending of Late Night with the Devil. Jack Delroy’s final vision shows him stabbing his dying wife, Madeleine, at the Grove. The camera then pulls back to reveal the broadcast studio: Jack has stabbed Lilly onstage. The film leaves the cause of his vision unresolved; it may be supernatural, psychological, or shaped by the film’s shifting perspective.
How the story reaches its final scene
Set on October 31, 1977, Late Night with the Devil follows Jack Delroy, host of the syndicated talk show Night Owls. After his wife Madeleine dies, the show’s ratings decline. Jack stages a Halloween special featuring psychic Christou, skeptic Carmichael, parapsychologist June Ross-Mitchell, and Lilly, a girl said to have survived a demonic cult. The IFC Center describes the film as unfolding mostly in real time and frames it as a story about celebrity and the price of fame. IFC Center film listing.
During the broadcast, Christou senses a darker presence, becomes violently ill, and later dies. Jack presses on with the planned segment involving Lilly, despite mounting alarm. Carmichael hypnotizes Gus, and the audience sees a disturbing apparent vision; the film later reveals that what viewers saw did not happen quite as presented. Lilly’s segment also departs from what the studio expects. As events escalate, the film shifts into Jack’s point of view.
What happens in the ending

Jack appears to be at the Grove, where Madeleine is alive but dying. She gives him a ceremonial knife and asks him to end her suffering.

The camera pulls back to the broadcast stage. Jack has stabbed Lilly, and the final beat is his stunned realization of what he has done.
The reveal makes Jack’s grief part of the violence: his mind presents Madeleine, but the physical act occurs in the studio and harms Lilly. The scene establishes what Jack does onstage; it does not establish a single, definitive cause for the vision.

Was the ending supernatural or in Jack’s mind?
The film supports both readings, without confirming either as the final answer. The Cairnes brothers, who wrote and directed the film, said they welcome viewers drawing their own conclusions about what the events mean: “So we love the idea that people can draw their own conclusions as to, you know, yeah, what it all means.” The Inside Reel interview transcript.

The most defensible interpretation holds both ideas in tension: Jack’s pursuit of ratings and unresolved grief converge in an irreversible act, while the film leaves open whether a supernatural force drives the final vision or horror imagery expresses his collapse. The IFC Center’s description calls the film a story about “the cult of personality and the price of fame”; that is a useful thematic frame, not proof that the ending has only one meaning.

What David Dastmalchian says about Jack
David Dastmalchian, who plays Jack, rejects the idea that Jack consciously chose to sacrifice Madeleine for success. He says, “I absolutely don’t believe that he consciously chose this,” and describes Jack as overwhelmed by grief and other unresolved problems, opening himself to something dangerous without intending the result. That is the actor’s interpretation, not confirmed canon. TheWrap’s ending explainer.
Dastmalchian also speculates that Jack might die by suicide if help does not arrive, or survive and receive professional care. Neither possibility is shown or confirmed by the film, so neither should be treated as the ending’s established aftermath.

Why the Madeleine vision matters
Jack’s vision turns the loss he cannot undo into a terrible reenactment: Madeleine asks him to end her suffering, and he acts in the vision while harming Lilly in the studio. That connection gives the finale emotional force without proving that grief alone explains it. Jack has also continued the broadcast as it becomes more dangerous, tying his pursuit of attention to the catastrophe. The film’s ending therefore works both as a horror reveal and as an interpretation of the cost of ambition, rather than a simple answer about whether possession is real.
