Joan is a six-part crime drama built around Sophie Turner’s performance as a jewel thief reinventing herself in 1980s Britain. Its wigs, diamonds and period soundtrack give it plenty of visual character; whether the crime story and Joan herself feel equally vivid is more debatable. The series is inspired by real-life Joan Hannington and certain events from her life, rather than presented as a documentary or a verified reconstruction.
What is Joan about?
Created and written by Anna Symon and directed by Richard Laxton, the ITV drama follows Joan as she escapes a dangerous relationship and tries to build a safer life for her daughter. The first episode begins in Kent in 1985: Joan flees criminal Gary Darvil, steals diamonds from a jeweller and meets antiques dealer and thief Boisie Hannington. ITV describes the series as inspired by Joan Hannington and certain events from her life, so its dramatic scenes should not be taken as a confirmed account of what happened.
That distinction matters. The premise gives the show a real-life point of departure, but the available official descriptions do not establish that the series follows Hannington’s chronology or verifies each incident. ITV’s series description and episode-one synopsis frame it as drama inspired by a life, not a documentary.
Does Sophie Turner carry the series?
Turner is the drama’s central attraction. Joan’s ability to survive, charm and impersonate gives the lead a role that depends on performance within performance: she has to make other people believe the identity she is presenting, while the audience watches her attempt to shape a new life. The CW’s official description similarly foregrounds Joan’s intelligence, charm and talent for impersonation. That is promotional framing, but it captures the character engine the series is built around.

Critics have singled out Turner’s work even when they have reservations about the writing. Rotten Tomatoes’ review excerpts include praise for the lead alongside criticism of clichéd or slow storytelling. That split points to the show’s central tension: Turner can make Joan compelling to watch, but a strong lead performance cannot by itself supply depth the script does not always give her.
How well does the 1980s style work?
The period setting is more than backdrop. Wigs, clothes, diamonds and music contribute much of the series’ immediate appeal, helping establish a world where changing one’s appearance can be part of the con. The Independent’s review notes the Eighties soundtrack, wigs and diamonds; Rotten Tomatoes’ listed reviews also include praise for costume and production design. The result is a polished, deliberately heightened look that suits a story about disguise and reinvention.

For a documentary-minded viewer, the style is also a cue to approach the show as dramatized entertainment rather than historical evidence. The visual detail creates atmosphere, but it does not independently confirm the accuracy of the events being depicted.
Is the heist story as engaging as the look?
The plotting has a clear hook: each theft is tied to Joan’s attempt to secure a future for her daughter. ITV’s promotional synopsis states that purpose directly. Yet the series’ reception suggests the narrative does not land with equal force for every critic. The Independent’s Jessie Thompson called it “middle-of-the-road” in a review published on 29 September 2024, while Rotten Tomatoes’ critic excerpts range from enthusiasm for Turner to complaints about slow or clichéd writing.

That is a disagreement among published critics, not a universal verdict. It does, however, describe the show’s unevenness: its forward motion and visual pleasures can be more persuasive than the development of its crime plot. The question is not whether the premise has enough material, but whether the drama consistently turns that material into suspense and character change.
Does Joan feel like a fully developed character?
The story gives Joan an understandable driving purpose: getting away from danger and trying to make a secure life for her daughter. That survival motive supplies urgency, but it can also narrow the characterization if every turn is explained mainly as another step toward empowerment or safety. The most interesting version of the show is the one implied by its premise—Joan as a resourceful performer who can adapt to different situations—rather than Joan reduced to a slogan about resilience.

Critical responses reflect the gap between an arresting central role and a script that does not satisfy everyone. The series offers a strong vehicle for Turner and a vivid period frame, but its ambition to make Joan’s transformation emotionally substantial is less consistently successful than its presentation of her disguises and heists.

On the Rotten Tomatoes season page, accessed on 7 October 2026, Joan had an 81% Tomatometer from 21 critic reviews and a 59% Popcornmeter from fewer than 50 audience ratings. These are a time-sensitive snapshot of that site’s samples, not a measure of all critics or viewers, and both figures can change. The contrast suggests mixed audience response alongside a more favorable critic score, but the small audience sample makes broad conclusions especially uncertain.

Is Joan worth watching?
Yes, if you want a stylish crime drama led by Turner and enjoy period detail, identity play and heist stories. Go in expecting a dramatized series inspired by a real person, not a documentary, and with the understanding that critics have disagreed about the writing and pace. Its strongest case is Turner within a sharply dressed 1980s setting; its weaker one is the consistency of the plotting and Joan’s characterization.
