Alex Parkinson’s Last Breath turns a real 2012 North Sea diving emergency into a compact procedural survival thriller. Its tension comes less from a conventional villain than from watching a work operation fail across the diver, the support team and the vessel above. The result is gripping as a piece of suspense filmmaking, but its convincing atmosphere should not be mistaken for a claim that every visual or operational detail is documentary-exact.
Is Last Breath based on a true story?
Yes. Focus Features describes the 2025 film as based on a true story. It dramatizes the 2012 North Sea emergency involving saturation diver Chris Lemons and fellow divers Dave Yuasa and Duncan Allcock. The team was sent to repair gas pipes roughly 300 feet underwater, according to director Alex Parkinson’s interview with Focus Features. The Associated Press review recounts a failure of the support vessel’s dynamic-positioning system, the severing of Lemons’s umbilical and the effort to recover him.
Those accounts establish the real event behind the film, not a guarantee that every moment onscreen reproduces the incident precisely. Parkinson directed the 2019 documentary Last Breath with Richard da Costa; this feature adapts that documentary and the same event in dramatic form. Focus Features’ film page identifies the feature as a thriller, directed by Parkinson and written by Mitchell LaFortune, Parkinson and David Brooks. Its principal cast includes Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, Finn Cole and Cliff Curtis. Focus Features lists its theatrical release as February 28, 2025.
How the procedural approach creates suspense
An emergency told through connected workspaces
The film builds its central suspense by moving among separated but interdependent spaces: the seabed, the diving bell and the support vessel. A failure in one place becomes an urgent problem elsewhere, so the audience follows the rescue as a sequence of operational consequences rather than as a contest against a single antagonist. The Associated Press’s Lindsey Bahr describes a long, suspenseful central stretch and an economical timeline. That is a critic’s account of the film’s effect, not proof that the onscreen sequence is a precise reconstruction of every procedure.

Equipment and process become part of the drama
The procedure gives the story its shape: work is underway, something goes wrong, the diver is separated from support, and the team tries to reach him. Showing the environments and equipment helps make that chain legible while preserving the darkness and confinement that make the situation frightening. The film’s tactile quality is part of its craft; by itself, it does not establish technical accuracy across the board.
What feels real—and what is visibly designed
Parkinson has said that the actual setting was pitch black, but that a completely black image would not work cinematically. The production therefore uses practical lights to let viewers read the space. He acknowledges the choice directly: “We took a bit of creative license, but it works for the film to help create a cinematic experience.” That admission clarifies the distinction: the environment draws on a real event, while the way viewers see it has been shaped for a feature film. Parkinson discusses the adaptation and visual choices in his Focus Features interview.

Production designer Grant Montgomery says the team built full-scale environments, including the saturation chambers, bell and bridge. He also notes that some bridge lights and buttons were there for appearance. Those details help explain why the film can feel tangible without serving as a technical demonstration. Montgomery describes the production design for Focus Features.
Feature film versus the 2019 documentary
The two Last Breath films draw on the same event, but use different forms. The 2019 film, co-directed by Parkinson and Richard da Costa, is a documentary; the 2025 feature stages the story as dramatic reconstruction. That changes the emphasis: a documentary can foreground direct factual exposition, while the feature can organize the emergency around scenes, performance and character experience.

Parkinson says the dramatic form let him reach emotional ground the documentary could not address as fully: “The documentary, by the nature of being a documentary, recounted aspects of the story in great detail, but there were also elements that I couldn’t address. In a dramatic film, I could explore more fully the emotional depth of the characters.” The feature’s interiority is therefore an intentional adaptation choice, not evidence that it is a more complete factual record.
Does the film work as a thriller?
For viewers drawn to process-driven suspense, the procedural structure is the film’s main strength: the emergency unfolds through linked tasks, constrained spaces and an attempted rescue. Bahr’s Associated Press review is positive but qualified, praising the central suspense and economical treatment while noting the film’s short running time. The AP awarded it three stars out of four; that is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus rating. The review lists 93 minutes, while the current Universal Pictures At Home page gives the runtime as 1 hour 34 minutes, a difference in listing or rounding.
