Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is the third Benoit Blanc film, with Daniel Craig back as the detective. Its central clue is an apparently impossible murder during a Good Friday service at a church in upstate New York: Monsignor Jefferson Wicks is dead, and suspicion falls on young priest Father Jud Duplenticy. The film is now streaming on Netflix, though availability can vary by region.
What is the new Knives Out movie called?
The official title is Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Rian Johnson wrote and directed the film, which brings Craig back as Benoit Blanc. Netflix describes it as the third film in the series.
The title shares its name with a 1997 U2 song. Johnson also encountered the phrase in the folk song “Go Down, Old Hannah”; as he told Netflix, “I’ve always thought that would be a great title for a creepy murder mystery.” Netflix’s title and cast guide gives that background.
What is the new plot clue?
The story moves from the mansions and vacation settings of the earlier films to a small church in upstate New York. Father Jud Duplenticy is sent to assist Monsignor Jefferson Wicks. During a Good Friday service, Wicks is killed, and the town suspects Jud. Blanc is called in to investigate alongside local police chief Geraldine Scott.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The setup is an impossible-crime puzzle rather than a revealed solution. Johnson described it to Netflix as: “A corpse is found in a locked room, a knife in his back, he is alone, and there are no ways in or out.” That clue establishes the mystery’s locked-room shape; it does not identify the killer or explain how the murder happened. Netflix’s September 8, 2025 teaser coverage includes Johnson’s description.

How does it compare with the other Knives Out mysteries?
Johnson has described the films as exploring different corners of the mystery genre. Netflix characterizes Knives Out as a cozy family-mansion mystery, Glass Onion as a broad vacation mystery, and Wake Up Dead Man as creepier and closer to the original film’s mode. The new entry’s church setting and locked-room premise give it a distinct framework rather than simply repeating the earlier stories.

Johnson cited John Dickson Carr’s locked-room mysteries and G. K. Chesterton’s Father Brown stories as influences. He also said this case takes Blanc on “his most personal journey yet,” forcing him to engage with the case and himself in a new way. Those comments offer clues about the film’s tone and character focus, not its resolution. Netflix’s teaser article includes the genre influences and Johnson’s remarks.
