Spoilers for all three stories in Kinds of Kindness. R.M.F. is a recurring character who appears across the film’s three loosely connected stories, and “The Death of R.M.F.” is the title of the first. The initials are not given a confirmed symbolic expansion in the official materials; claims that they stand for a larger idea are interpretations, not established fact. The film’s clearest throughline is its uneasy relationship between control and freedom: its characters seek security, love, faith or belonging, but those needs can become forms of dependence.
What happens in Kinds of Kindness?
Yorgos Lanthimos’s 2024 film is structured as a triptych fable, not as one continuous conventional plot. The Festival de Cannes describes three separate stories: a man trying to take control of a life in which he has had little choice; a policeman troubled when his wife returns after going missing at sea and seems changed; and a woman searching for someone with a special ability who is destined to become a spiritual leader. Cannes lists the film’s runtime as 165 minutes and its production countries as the United States and United Kingdom.
The stories share a world and a cast rather than a single, straightforward chain of events. Jesse Plemons plays Robert, Daniel and Andrew in the three segments; Emma Stone plays Rita, Liz and Emily. The production notes describe this repeated casting as a way to create familiarity and a subtle sense of continuation. A character’s recurrence therefore helps bind the parts together, but it does not make them chapters in one conventional plot.
Who is R.M.F.?
R.M.F. is the recurring figure named in the first segment’s title, “The Death of R.M.F.” A secondary explainer identifies the letters as his initials. The official materials establish the title and the film’s three-story structure, but do not supply a definitive expanded form of the initials or declare that they encode one particular concept.

That distinction matters: R.M.F.’s recurrence can invite symbolic readings, but the evidence does not settle one. It is reasonable to consider him part of the film’s connective tissue; it would go beyond what the available official sources establish to present a hidden expansion of his initials as fact or as Lanthimos’s confirmed intention.
What does the ending mean?
A strong way to read the film’s ending is through the tension between autonomy and dependence. Across the three premises, people look for control over their lives, security in relationships or home, and reassurance through faith or belonging. The production notes identify power, authority, free will, human relationships, trust, faith and belonging as recurring concerns. Those themes support an interpretation of the triptych as a study of what happens when the structures people rely on become restrictive—or when they are offered freedom but struggle to live with it.

Lanthimos described that paradox in the Cannes production notes: “I think it’s interesting to observe how one might think they have control over things or that they’re free to decide things. Then, when they are given the absolute freedom, it’s hard for them to deal with it and navigate it.” This comment offers a useful lens, not a decoder that proves every event has one allegorical meaning.
The other comments in the notes deepen that reading. Jesse Plemons connected the second story with the security associated with marriage and home, and the third with the security that faith can provide. Margaret Qualley described characters trying to control their lives, other people and their sense of belonging. Emma Stone put the emotional conflict as a wish to be loved, accepted and controlled set against a wish to be free and in charge of oneself—even when freedom risks losing love. Producer Andrew Lowe likewise described Lanthimos’s recurring interest in people living by their own rules, society’s rules or those of a higher authority, often pushed to absurd and darkly comic extremes.

How the three stories connect
“The Death of R.M.F.”: authority and control
The first segment centers on a man whose choices are constrained and his effort to take control. The production notes frame Robert’s relationship with Raymond through authority and control. That makes the opening story a direct starting point for the film’s broader interest in dependence: a person may seek freedom from another’s power while remaining caught in the need for approval, direction or security.
The second story: security and trust
The second premise turns on a policeman’s alarm at his wife’s return after she has been missing at sea. She seems different, and the uncertainty destabilizes the security associated with marriage and home. Plemons’s comments identify that sense of security as a relevant theme; they do not establish a single official explanation for the story’s events.

The third story: faith and belonging
The final premise follows a woman searching for a person with a special ability and a spiritual-leader destiny. The official Cannes synopsis establishes that search, while the production notes connect the story’s themes to the security faith can provide. The spiritual search can therefore be read alongside the other stories’ attempts to find a dependable authority or a place to belong.

The official Cannes synopsis summarizes the third story’s premise, but it does not describe the film’s final sequence. The Cannes production notes provide thematic context rather than a scene-by-scene account. Accordingly, the supported conclusion is interpretive: the triptych returns to freedom, authority, trust and belonging without establishing one exclusive key that resolves every ending detail. A precise account of what happens in the last scene should be distinguished from what a viewer thinks it means.
