Walter Salles’s I’m Still Here (Ainda Estou Aqui) is a quietly devastating family drama about what political violence leaves behind. Rather than treating the 1971 disappearance of Rubens Paiva as the start of a conventional investigation, the film stays close to his wife, Eunice, and their five children as ordinary family life is broken and remade. That intimate focus makes it one of the year’s most affecting films.
A family home changed by a disappearance
Set in early-1970s Rio de Janeiro, the film begins by making the Paivas’ home feel lived in: a place of conversation, movement and family routines. Then government authorities take Rubens away. The shift is not only a plot event; it transforms the conditions of daily life for Eunice and the children.
Fernanda Torres plays Eunice, with Selton Mello as Rubens and Fernanda Montenegro also among the lead cast. Salles builds the story around Eunice’s effort to find a way forward while caring for five children and living with the uncertainty and consequences of her husband’s disappearance.
Why the domestic scale matters
In his review for The Atlantic, David Sims notes how the film first establishes the family’s rhythms, allowing the aftermath to register as an ongoing part of life rather than a self-contained mystery. That approach is central to the film’s power. It gives political repression a human scale: not an abstraction, but a force that enters a household and changes what its members can expect from the future.

This is not structured like a plot-driven political thriller or a courtroom drama. The story is less interested in procedural momentum than in the long, uneven work of living through loss. The focus stays with the family’s experience, even as the events point toward a wider history of state repression.
A restrained performance and a deliberate pace
Torres gives Eunice a performance defined by resolve without reducing her to a symbol of strength. Her character must keep making decisions in circumstances she did not choose. The film’s restraint lets those choices accumulate rather than announcing every emotion through heightened scenes.

The pace is deliberate, and the film asks viewers to spend time inside that restraint. A Rotten Tomatoes excerpt from an individual reviewer describes it as moving at its own pace and suggests that this approach will not appeal to everyone. That is a useful qualification, not a consensus verdict: viewers looking for a fast-moving political thriller may find the film measured, while those drawn to intimate character drama may find that its patience deepens the impact.
Based on a true story—and on a memoir
Sony Pictures describes the film as based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s biographical book and true story. The book, Ainda Estou Aqui, is by Rubens and Eunice’s son, Marcelo Rubens Paiva. The film is an adaptation, however, not a documentary record: its scenes and chronology belong to a dramatic work, even as the story is rooted in real events.

The historical stakes are not incidental to the family drama. Rubens Paiva was taken by military authorities in 1971 Brazil, and the film follows the repercussions for Eunice and their children. It keeps the viewer near the people most directly affected instead of attempting a broad survey of the period.
A major international-film award
At the March 2, 2025 Academy Awards, I’m Still Here won Best International Feature Film. The Associated Press reported that it was Brazil’s first win in the category. The recognition suits a film whose reach comes from specificity: its account of one family makes a political history legible without turning its characters into illustrations.

Runtime and where to watch
The Gene Siskel Film Center lists the runtime as 136 minutes and the language as Portuguese with English subtitles; Rotten Tomatoes rounds the runtime to 2 hours 15 minutes. The film also received the Venice Golden Osella for screenplay, according to the Film Center’s listing.
Sony’s film page lists DVD and digital viewing options. Availability can change and differs by country, so check the current listing for your region. Rotten Tomatoes has listed Netflix subscription streaming and Fandango rental or purchase, but those options are also territory- and date-dependent.
