Spoilers for all of House of the Dragon Season 1, Episode 3. In “Second of His Name,” Daemon Targaryen turns a desperate position in the Stepstones into a bloody victory, while King Viserys faces a different contest over power: whether the birth of his son Aegon will displace Rhaenyra as heir. The episode’s parallel stories pit public duty against personal pride, and political reality against the meaning people read into symbols.
What happens in House of the Dragon Episode 3?
Officially titled “Second of His Name,” the third episode of Season 1 moves between Daemon and Corlys Velaryon’s war against the Triarchy in the Stepstones and the celebration of Aegon’s second nameday at court. Its official synopsis describes Daemon and the Sea Snake battling the Crabfeeder as the realm celebrates Aegon and Rhaenyra faces pressure to marry. The episode was written by Gabe Fonseca and Ryan Condal and directed by Greg Yaitanes, according to the HBO pressroom.
The two plots are connected by a question of power. In the Stepstones, Daemon wants a victory that will establish his value without the king’s help. At the royal hunt, Viserys must confront whether the birth of a male child changes the future he promised Rhaenyra.
Why is the Stepstones war going so badly for Daemon?
The episode opens with Daemon attacking the Triarchy’s forces from the air on Caraxes. Their archers drive him back, showing that dragonfire alone cannot end a war fought by enemies who can hide and adapt. The story then jumps ahead roughly three years: the campaign has dragged on, and reports of its cost reach King’s Landing while Viserys remains reluctant to intervene. When the Crown finally sends aid, Daemon refuses to be rescued. He strikes the messenger and then stages an apparent surrender, drawing the Crabfeeder’s soldiers out from their positions. The move gives Daemon the opening he wants, but his charge leaves him badly exposed and nearly overwhelmed.
How does Daemon defeat the Crabfeeder?
Daemon’s attack is the spectacle of the battle, not a victory achieved alone. Corlys’s soldiers join the fight, and Laenor Velaryon arrives on Seasmoke, shifting the balance. Daemon later emerges carrying the Crabfeeder’s body, but the episode does not show a complete, clear duel: the killing is conveyed through the bloody aftermath. That distinction matters. Daemon’s willingness to risk himself helps lure the enemy into the open, but Corlys’s forces and Laenor’s dragon make the victory possible. His pride drives the plan; collective effort wins the battle.
Why is Rhaenyra under pressure to marry?
At Aegon’s nameday celebration, the court treats the newborn prince as a reason to reconsider the succession. Otto Hightower suggests marrying Aegon to Rhaenyra, joining the competing claims within the royal family. Viserys rejects the proposal. Still, the pressure is plain: courtiers assume that having a son should alter the status of his daughter, whom he named heir.

The royal family’s trip to the Kingswood turns that political tension into a marriage negotiation. Jason Lannister uses the hunt to promote a match with Rhaenyra, who resents being discussed as a political prize. Her connection with Ser Criston Cole offers a more personal counterpoint to the court’s calculations. After wavering, Viserys tells his daughter that he will not replace her as heir; the episode’s court and hunt scenes are recounted by Vanity Fair.
What does the white hart mean?
The hunt supplies a visual contrast rather than a formal rule of succession. Viserys’s party kills an ordinary stag. Away from the royal spectacle, Rhaenyra encounters a rare white hart and chooses not to kill it. Vanity Fair reads the contrast as imagery that favors Rhaenyra’s claim, but the show does not establish the animal as an official or unquestionable sign that she is the rightful heir.

Sky’s episode guide quotes showrunner Ryan Condal describing Viserys as drawn to “mythology and signs and dreams and symbolism.” Director Miguel Sapochnik, also quoted by Sky, notes the significance of the king’s party finding a brown stag rather than a white one: “So then when he turns out that it’s not a white stag, but it’s a brown one, his relief is palpable, but also in a funny way there’s disappointment that sometimes these things aren’t meant to be.” The scene leaves room for both readings: Viserys may feel relief that he has not been confronted with an omen, while the audience can see Rhaenyra’s encounter as a pointed image of her standing apart.

Daemon’s campaign and the hunt echo one another without resolving the same way. At court, inheritance is debated through proposals, promises and symbols; in the Stepstones, power is decided by a risky feint and the arrival of allies. Rhaenyra receives renewed assurance from her father, but the court’s assumptions remain a threat. Daemon gets the bloody triumph he wants, but only after the help he initially rejected arrives.

That contrast makes the episode’s title pointed: Aegon is celebrated as the “second of his name,” yet his birth does not erase the succession conflict. Meanwhile, Daemon’s public victory cannot be separated from his private need to prove himself.
