Rhaenyra meets Alicent in secret at the Sept of Baelor, hoping to stop the fighting. Their conversation reveals that the war may have grown from a fatal misunderstanding of King Viserys’s last words—but Alicent does not immediately accept that she was wrong.
Why does Rhaenyra seek a secret meeting?
In Callie Ahlgrim’s recap of the season-two episode, Mysaria arranges a covert meeting between Rhaenyra and Alicent at the Sept of Baelor, away from spies and royal guards. Rhaenyra wants to avert further bloodshed and find a possible path to peace. The account presents the meeting as an attempt to reach Alicent directly, rather than let the conflict keep escalating.
What does Alicent believe Viserys said?
Alicent remains convinced that Viserys named her son Aegon as his heir on his deathbed. She also fears Rhaenyra was involved in the murder of her grandson. When Rhaenyra asks her to explain the king’s final words, Alicent recalls: “He was weary. It was hard, at times, to understand. But he spoke Aegon’s name. He said he was the prince that was promised to unite the realm.”
What misunderstanding does the meeting uncover?
Rhaenyra understands that Alicent took Viserys’s mention of “Aegon” to mean her son, King Aegon II. Rhaenyra explains that he was referring instead to Aegon the Conqueror and the Targaryen prophecy. The same name had led the two women to very different conclusions about what Viserys wanted.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ahlgrim’s recap describes Alicent as sincere in her interpretation, but the revelation does not make her concede at once. The conversation exposes a tragic misunderstanding; it does not resolve the political and personal conflict between them.
Why the conversation matters
The meeting gives Rhaenyra and Alicent a chance to confront the words at the center of their disagreement. It shows how Viserys’s deathbed statement, filtered through an ambiguous name and a prophecy, could reinforce Alicent’s claim while Rhaenyra understood the king’s meaning differently. Rhaenyra’s appeal for peace meets a real point of connection, but not an immediate end to the war.
