Ellen Pompeo said she reached a point where she could no longer keep doing Grey’s Anatomy as before. “I really just felt like an animal at the zoo,” she reportedly told the Call Her Daddy podcast, explaining that she did not know what would come next but felt she had to leave the role’s previous level of involvement. Her change was a step back from regular on-screen work—not a complete break from the series.
Why did Ellen Pompeo step back from Grey’s Anatomy?
Pompeo’s explanation, as reported by The Hollywood Gossip on March 19, 2025, was that continuing in the same way no longer felt possible. The report attributes these remarks to her appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast:
“It was to the point where I really just felt like an animal at the zoo. I’m a big believer in destiny. I thought, if there’s something else I’m meant to do, it’s gonna find me. But I know I have to leave this.”
She also reportedly said, “I didn’t know what I was going to do. I just knew that I really couldn’t do Grey’s anymore.” That describes a personal decision to change her involvement, not a claim that she was fired.

Did she leave the show completely?
No. The report says Pompeo reduced her screen time in 2022, while remaining a producer and making occasional cameos. The distinction matters: she stepped away from being a regular on-screen presence, but the account does not describe her as severing every connection to Grey’s Anatomy.
What made the decision difficult?
Pompeo reportedly said she did not have an immediate next step lined up. She hoped for a “soft landing,” describing the appeal of finding new opportunities while still working on the show. Instead, she initially worried that no opportunities were coming and wondered whether the industry wanted her. The report quotes her saying, “Sometimes you know you’d like opportunities to come while you’re doing something, so you have an easy exit.”

The same account says Pompeo had played Meredith Grey since 2005 and described having spent 20 years on television. It also places the decision against the show’s work demands: according to the report, she described its former production schedule as lasting 10 months per year and contrasted it with network orders of 15 episodes. These figures are context reported secondhand, not independently verified production records; Pompeo’s stated reason was that she felt she needed to leave the role’s previous arrangement.
What did Pompeo do next?
The Hollywood Gossip identified Good American Family as Pompeo’s next lead role and reported that its first two episodes became available on Hulu on March 19, 2025. In the account, that opportunity followed a period of uncertainty rather than serving as a prearranged exit from Grey’s Anatomy.
