How to Die Alone is worth watching if you like comedy that lets embarrassment sit beside real sadness. Natasha Rothwell makes Mel’s self-sabotage funny without making her pain a punchline, and the show’s most affecting moments grow from that tension. It is not consistently light or tonally smooth, but its mix of slapstick, loneliness and hard-won hope gives the series a distinct emotional pull.
What is How to Die Alone about?
Hulu describes Mel as a broke JFK airport employee who has never been in love and has forgotten how to dream. After an accidental brush with death, she tries to start living more boldly. The series turns that premise into a story about the small humiliations and choices that can keep someone stuck—and the difficult work of changing course.
Hulu lists the 2024 drama-comedy as one season of eight episodes. Natasha Rothwell created the series and stars as Mel; Conrad Ricamora, Jocko Sims and KeiLyn Durrel Jones are also among the listed cast. Hulu’s series page has the current episode listing, while Hulu Press identifies Rothwell and Vera Santamaria as co-showrunners and executive producers.
Why the comedy and heartbreak belong together
Rothwell makes Mel’s self-sabotage legible
Mel can be her own obstacle: she wants a fuller life, yet insecurity and habit pull her back toward familiar disappointments. Rothwell gives that contradiction comic energy without flattening it into a gag. The humor comes from recognizing how a person can see what needs to change and still find reasons to avoid changing it. That makes Mel’s awkwardness feel human rather than merely cute.

The emotional turns have room to land
The show’s comedy does not erase the loneliness beneath Mel’s situation. Its most heartwarming passages work because they do not pretend that one jolt of fear or one burst of courage can undo years of feeling left behind. Hope here is less a sudden transformation than an imperfect attempt to make a different choice. That modest scale is where the series earns its tenderness.
The ensemble broadens Mel’s world
Ricamora, Sims and Durrel Jones help make the story feel like more than a solo portrait of despair. The supporting cast gives Mel’s relationships and workplace life texture, offering points of friction and connection beyond her inner monologue. The center remains Rothwell’s performance, but the ensemble helps the series feel inhabited.

Is How to Die Alone funny or sad?
It is both, and its balance is deliberately unsettled. A comic scene can give way to a sober one; a stretch of awkward humor may feel more rueful than laugh-out-loud funny. The early episodes can also feel downbeat. TVLine’s review, which considered the first four episodes, praised the cast while finding that opening run frustrating and bleak. The Los Angeles Times likewise described the show’s movement between slapstick and straight drama.
That tonal variety is a strength when the jokes expose Mel’s defenses and make the emotional reality sharper. It is less effective when the shifts interrupt momentum or leave a scene unsure whether to linger or move on. The show does not deliver a steady stream of punchlines; its comedy is most satisfying when it comes from character, not from a need to keep every moment buoyant.

Do the person-on-the-street interviews work?
The Los Angeles Times notes that episodes begin with person-on-the-street interviews. The device gives the series a brief outside perspective on the fears and assumptions surrounding its subject, creating a frame for Mel’s more private story. I found it most useful when it sharpened the episode’s theme; when it pauses the narrative without adding much, it can feel like an interruption. It is a distinctive formal choice, though not every viewer will find it equally engaging.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is How to Die Alone worth watching, and where can you watch it?
Yes, if you are in the mood for a character-led comedy-drama rather than an uncomplicated feel-good comedy. Rothwell’s performance and the show’s willingness to let loneliness remain part of the joke make it rewarding, even when the tonal changes are uneven. Hulu currently lists the series and its eight episodes on its official series page. That listing is a current platform reference, not a guarantee of availability in every country.
