His Three Daughters turns three days in a New York apartment into a sharply observed drama about caregiving, sibling resentment and grief. Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne make its three sisters feel distinct without reducing them to types; their uneasy reunion gives this intimate film its force. Calling it the best film of the year is a matter of taste, not a measurable fact—but the performances and emotional precision make a persuasive case.
What is His Three Daughters about?
Written and directed by Azazel Jacobs, His Three Daughters follows Katie (Carrie Coon), Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne), sisters who gather in their father’s New York apartment as his health declines. Netflix describes the story as unfolding over three volatile days, as death approaches, old grievances surface and love emerges through the fractures.

The sisters do not arrive as a cohesive caregiving team. Katie is a controlling Brooklyn mother; Christina, a free-spirited mother temporarily separated from her children; and Rachel, a sports-betting stoner who has stayed in the apartment with their father. Katie and Christina are stepsisters to Rachel, and their different family histories and worldviews shape the distance between them.
That setup gives the film a practical pressure point: people have to make decisions and share space even when they have not resolved what divides them. The father’s decline is the circumstance, but the sisters’ relationship is the drama.

Why the apartment setting works
The confined setting makes ordinary caregiving tasks carry emotional weight. A conversation cannot easily be escaped; old resentments surface in the same rooms where the sisters face the present crisis. The three-day frame adds urgency without requiring the film to turn into a procedural account of illness.
Jacobs’s chamber-drama approach also narrows the audience’s view. The father’s condition matters, but the film’s attention stays on the living: how each sister tries to manage fear, responsibility and the others. That focus distinguishes it from an end-of-life story built chiefly around a patient’s decline.

How the three performances shape the drama
Carrie Coon as Katie
Katie’s controlling manner reads as both a source of friction and a way to impose order when the situation feels unmanageable. Coon gives that control an edge without making Katie a simple antagonist.
Elizabeth Olsen as Christina
Christina’s freer temperament puts her at odds with Katie’s need to direct events. Olsen gives the character room to be more than the family’s easygoing counterweight: her separation from her children is part of the emotional context she brings into the apartment.

Natasha Lyonne as Rachel
Rachel has remained in the apartment, making her relationship to the father and the household different from her sisters’. Lyonne plays her as a person with her own routines and defenses, not merely a disruptive presence in the reunion.
TIME’s review describes the film as a lived-in tale of sisterhood and grief and emphasizes how the performances reveal the characters’ defenses. That is a critical reading rather than a plot fact, but it gets at the film’s central strength: the actresses make conflict feel like the expression of accumulated history, not a sequence of arguments inserted for effect.

Does it balance humor and grief?
Netflix’s official description calls the film tense, touching and funny. The humor belongs to the family portrait: it can make a difficult exchange feel recognizable without canceling the seriousness of what the sisters are facing. The film’s appeal depends on that balance. It is not a comedy about caregiving, nor does it treat grief as solemn at every moment.
The sisters’ different ways of coping give the film its tonal movement. Their disagreements can be frustrating, but they also make the family feel specific. The resulting drama is intimate rather than broadly sentimental.

Is His Three Daughters the best film of the year?
“Best film of the year” is an editorial judgment, not a conclusion that a review aggregator can settle. The case for the phrase is strongest if you value concentrated storytelling, actors working in close relation and a family drama that allows love and resentment to coexist. The film’s apartment setting and short time span make its emotional pressure unusually focused.
It may be less satisfying for viewers who want a wider view of the family, a plot driven by external events or a clean resolution to long-running tensions. The film’s interest is in emotional movement: whether the sisters can see one another differently, not whether a few days erase their history.
