It can work as a brisk, self-contained follow-up for viewers who want more political suspense after The Diplomat—but it is not a direct substitute for that show’s ongoing story of diplomacy, statecraft and relationships.
What is Hostage about?
Netflix’s official synopsis puts the crisis plainly: “When the British prime minister’s husband is kidnapped and the French president starts receiving threats, both leaders must face an impossible choice.” The story begins during a French president’s visit to the UK. British Prime Minister Abigail Dalton and French President Vivienne Toussaint are already rivals; kidnapping and blackmail threaten both their personal lives and political positions, forcing them to consider working together to uncover the plot.

Netflix describes the 2025 series as a political thriller and a limited series. Matt Charman wrote it, and Suranne Jones stars as Dalton and executive-produces. Julie Delpy plays Toussaint. The cast also includes Corey Mylchreest, Lucian Msamati, Ashley Thomas, James Cosmo, Martin McCann and Jehnny Beth.
How does it compare with The Diplomat?
The two series share an appetite for high-stakes politics and a prominent woman at the center, but their storytelling engines are different. Netflix describes The Diplomat as an ongoing series created and run by Debora Cahn. It follows US ambassador Kate Wyler amid US–UK tensions and a strained marriage; Netflix’s Media Center lists a fourth season.

That difference matters if “replacement” means a new version of the same viewing experience. Hostage promises crisis-driven jeopardy and a contained arc; The Diplomat has room to keep developing its diplomatic and personal entanglements over multiple seasons. The premise and format make Hostage a plausible choice when you want a shorter political thriller, not an equivalent continuation of Kate Wyler’s story or the same kind of statecraft drama.
Do Jones and Delpy make the political conflict compelling?
The premise gives Jones and Delpy contrasting roles: two leaders whose rivalry is tested by threats to their families and political futures. The Associated Press reports that the kidnapping and a career-threatening scandal put both women under pressure. Their pairing is the series’ clearest point of distinction from The Diplomat, which centers on one ambassador rather than two rival heads of government.

Delpy also described the demands of the political speeches in practical terms. “I had the same anxiety as if I was doing it for real,” she told the Associated Press. She added of political language: “Every word is being scrutinized, like if you use a term instead of another, it’s going to be judged by the press.” Those are Delpy’s reflections on performing politicians and their language, not claims about a particular real government.
