Spoilers for Heretic. Reed’s staged resurrection is a trick, not proof of supernatural power. In the final struggle, Sister Barnes appears to kill him, giving Sister Paxton a way out. But the butterfly and the calm, bright final setting leave open whether Paxton has escaped alive or is experiencing an afterlife—or a dying vision.

Why does Reed stage a resurrection?

Reed lures Mormon missionaries Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton into his home, then turns their conversation about religion into a test of belief and a struggle for control. The Directors Guild of America describes the women as trapped in his house and forced to draw on their faith to get out (DGA event summary).

Reed’s apparent resurrection is part of that test. A woman appears to return from death, but Paxton realizes she is not the same woman who died. The switch exposes the scene as a deception designed to make Reed seem able to dictate what counts as evidence. The account of the trick is discussed in Den of Geek’s interview with co-writer and co-director Bryan Woods and TIME’s interview with Chloe East, who plays Paxton.

What does Reed mean by “the one true religion”?

Woods describes Reed’s conclusion as control: after investigating religions throughout his life, Reed has formed the hypothesis that control is the one true religion. That is Reed’s worldview, as explained by Woods—not a verdict the film establishes about religion. Reed condemns systems of belief while constructing his own coercive system, which makes domination the central contradiction in his argument (Den of Geek; see also the filmmakers’ A24 note on Heretic).

How do Barnes and Paxton fight back?

In the last confrontation, Reed stabs both missionaries. Barnes then appears to rise and kill him with a piece of wood. Her intervention gives Paxton time to escape through a small opening. That is the physical chain of events the ending presents; Barnes’s return is not confirmed as a miracle (TheWrap’s ending explanation).

What does the butterfly mean?

Earlier, Paxton says she would want to return as a butterfly after death and make her presence known by landing on someone she loves. The butterfly that lands on her at the end calls back to that wish. It can suggest that Paxton’s loved ones—or a continuing spirit—are somehow present, but the image does not establish that reincarnation has occurred.

The quiet, bright setting also resembles the afterlife Paxton described earlier. Taken together, the setting and butterfly allow at least three readings:

  • Literal escape: Barnes kills Reed, Paxton gets outside, and the butterfly is a meaningful coincidence or a sign of hope.
  • Afterlife: Paxton has died, and the scene represents a spiritual existence connected to her beliefs.
  • Dying vision: Paxton is near death and experiences a final image shaped by her earlier words and hopes.

The film does not supply a detail that conclusively selects one of these possibilities. TheWrap reports that co-director Scott Beck intended to leave room for multiple interpretations, while East told TIME that viewers’ perspectives on the film can differ and that she did not see a single right answer (TheWrap; TIME).

What the ending confirms—and what it leaves open

On the plot level, Paxton reaches an exit after Barnes appears to kill Reed. On the level of interpretation, the butterfly and the final setting make her survival uncertain. The filmmakers’ A24 note says they do not have answers to the great unknowns about God and what happens after death; Beck likewise told TheWrap that the ending is not for the filmmakers to define. Those comments support ambiguity rather than a hidden, definitive answer (A24; TheWrap).
