The series was originally created for Canada’s Crave; HBO Max later announced its U.S. and Australian launch. Its appeal rests on the same engine as the book: rival stars Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov build a secret relationship over years, with sexual intimacy forming part of the romance rather than a separate spectacle.
What is Heated Rivalry about?
Shane Hollander, a Canadian hockey star associated with Montreal, and Ilya Rozanov, a Russian star associated with Boston in the television adaptation, are fierce competitors whose rivalry turns into a private relationship. The story follows that connection across years as the men navigate attraction, denial, and the pressures around keeping their relationship secret. Sky’s official description characterizes the first season as a journey through love, denial, and self-discovery.
The series’ frank sex scenes are one reason it has been described as “smutty,” but the label alone misses their role in the storytelling. In The Atlantic, critic Faith Hill argues that the scenes let viewers see the relationship changing through physical intimacy over time. That is Hill’s interpretation, not a stated account of creator intent or a measured consensus among viewers.
Is Heated Rivalry based on a book?
Yes. Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry was published in 2019 by Carina Press, a Harlequin imprint. It is the second novel in her Game Changers series and introduces Shane and Ilya. Their story continues in Reid’s The Long Game (2022). The television adaptation draws from the Game Changers books.

Was the story based on real hockey players?
Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin’s rivalry was one inspiration, but Reid has explicitly distinguished inspiration from portraying real people. In an interview quoted by Axios, she said: “One of my inspirations for Heated Rivalry was, obviously, the extremely entertaining rivalry between Crosby and Ovechkin. But I was also inspired by other sports rivalries, by other fictional stories, and by my love of the enemies-to-lovers and forbidden romance tropes.” She added, “I never directly base my characters on any real people.” Shane and Ilya are fictional; the novel is not a fictionalized account of Crosby and Ovechkin, and it makes no claim about either player’s private life.
How did the Crave series reach HBO Max?
The production and distribution story matters: Heated Rivalry was originally created for Canadian streaming service Crave, not commissioned as an HBO production. Warner Bros. Discovery’s pressroom described the series as adapted from Reid’s Game Changers books and announced that two episodes would debut on HBO Max in the United States and Australia on Friday, November 28, 2025.

That announcement establishes an initial launch in those two territories; it is not a complete or current map of where every season can be streamed. In Canada, the series originated with Crave. Availability elsewhere depends on territory and season, so check the local service catalog rather than assuming HBO Max is the universal home.
How big is the hit?
Available figures point to attention across television and books, but they measure different things and should not be treated as one verified audience total.
- Reported episode audience: Rolling Stone Canada attributed an average of 10 million viewers per episode to Variety in 2026. This is a reported average, not a directly verified platform-wide count.
- Audiobook listening: Spotify, as reported by Rolling Stone Canada in 2026, said listening increased by more than 1,500 percent during the week of a bookstore shortage. The figure applies to that week, not to a general or ongoing growth rate.
- One audiobook event: Rolling Stone Canada reported more than 200 ticket reservations and 155 people on a waitlist for a 2026 Spotify audiobook event. Those numbers indicate demand for that particular event, not the size of the full readership or audience.
Where can you watch Heated Rivalry, and when is season two?
The confirmed streaming information is territory-specific:

What should readers know about the next book?
Reid’s next novel, Unrivaled, was reported by the Associated Press on February 24, 2026 as moved to June 2027. The AP attributed the change to the demands of sudden fame and worsening Parkinson’s symptoms, which Reid said made writing physically difficult. That is the release date reported at that time, not a guarantee against later publisher or author updates. Reid told the AP: “And there’s nothing more important to me than ‘Unrivaled’ being the best book it can possibly be.”
For readers following Shane and Ilya specifically, The Long Game is the direct continuation of their story. Heated Rivalry itself is the second Game Changers novel; readers looking for the full series order should confirm it against Reid’s current bibliography.
