Spoilers for the Season 1 finale and the ending of Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry. The finale keeps the book’s emotional turning points—Shane and Ilya’s private time together, their family conversations, their declaration of love and the start of imagining a future—but changes its closing image. The novel ends with an Irina Foundation press conference; the series leaves Shane and Ilya together in a car. Creator Jacob Tierney said he wanted viewers to leave with the couple’s happiness, not charity logistics. Season 2 was renewed, but the available updates are dated expectations, not a confirmed premiere schedule.
What were Tierney’s must-haves from the book?
In a December 25, 2025 interview with TheWrap, creator and executive producer Jacob Tierney identified the parents’ material, Shane and Ilya saying “I love you,” and the pair beginning to plan a future as essential elements of the finale. The episode adapts the cottage section of Rachel Reid’s novel, shifting into a more intimate scale after the season’s larger events.
That distinction matters: the finale does not attempt to reproduce every detail of the novel’s ending. Its focus is the relationship and the beginnings of a shared life, with family conversations included in that emotional turn.
Why does the show end differently from the book?
In Reid’s Heated Rivalry, the ending includes a press conference announcing the Irina Foundation. The TV finale instead closes on Shane and Ilya driving together. In a December 26, 2025 interview with Collider, Tierney explained that he did not want the final minutes to shift into the practical details of how a charity would operate:

“I don’t think the last four minutes of a TV show is the time to give you logistical information about the way a charity organization is going to work.”
The difference is one of emphasis. The novel’s press conference gives readers an epilogue and information about the foundation; the series chooses an image of the couple’s private happiness. Tierney told TheWrap that he wanted the show to end with the feeling he had when he finished the book: “I’m so happy they get to be happy.”

What changes in Shane and Yuna’s conversation?
The finale gives Shane and his mother, Yuna, a direct conversation in private. Tierney told Collider, “They needed to have a conversation,” and said Yuna would remain important to the story. He wanted the exchange to help viewers understand both of them, including Yuna’s belief that she was helping Shane pursue hockey.
Rather than simply recasting Yuna as an obstacle, the scene makes room for her perspective while letting Shane speak directly to her. It clarifies their relationship at a point when the story is looking ahead.

Why do Shane and Ilya remain on screen during the credits?
Tierney told Collider that the credits were designed as movie-style credits: a visible acknowledgment of the crew and a continuation of the couple’s quiet moment. He wanted the sequence to be engaging enough that viewers would stay with it. The choice extends the car scene instead of cutting immediately from the couple to a conventional end card.

Season 2 has been renewed, and reporting published in 2025 and April 2026 points toward an adaptation drawing partly on Rachel Reid’s The Long Game. Those reports describe plans and expectations at the time of publication; they do not establish a present-day production status or premiere date.

| Report | What it said at the time |
|---|---|
| TheWrap, December 25, 2025 | Tierney discussed the renewal and said the wait would not be “too long.” That was not a dated release commitment. |
| The Hollywood Reporter, December 25, 2025 | Tierney had not started writing Season 2 at that point and expected it to adapt The Long Game. |
| >The Associated Press, April 22, 2026 | Tierney expected filming to begin that summer and said Season 2 would be based partly on The Long Game. This was an expectation reported on that date, not confirmation that filming began. |
The AP also reported that Reid was working on Unrivaled, a third Shane-and-Ilya book then scheduled for 2027; the report noted a subsequent move of its release to the following summer. That publication context does not establish a TV Season 2 premiere date. No date is confirmed in these reports.
