The show’s ensemble also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, and Teresa Palmer as Sif. Here’s the announced cast alongside the characters they play—and the key difference between the new live-action roles and the games’ performances.
God of War TV cast: actors and characters
Amazon’s official series overview, updated September 8, 2026, lists the following cast. The game-character column identifies the role each actor plays in the series; it does not imply that every actor is reprising a game voice or performance-capture role.
| TV actor | Character in the series | Connection or context |
|---|---|---|
| Dave Bautista | Kratos | The central warrior and Atreus’ father; Bautista is the current announced Kratos. |
| Callum Vinson | Atreus | Kratos’ son; Vinson remains attached after the Kratos recasting. |
| Mandy Patinkin | Odin | The All-Father. |
| Ólafur Darri Ólafsson | Thor | The God of Thunder. |
| Max Parker | Heimdall | Watchman of Asgard. |
| Teresa Palmer | Sif | Thor’s wife. |
| Ed Skrein | Baldur | Odin’s son. |
| Alastair Duncan | Mimir | Duncan is also associated with Mimir as a voice actor in the games. |
| Jeff Gulka | Sindri | Dwarf blacksmith. |
| Danny Woodburn | Brok | Dwarf blacksmith. |
| Sonya Walger | Freya | Announced as Freya. |
| Island Austin | Thurd | Amazon’s overview spells the character’s name “Thurd.” |
| Ben Chapple | Magni | Announced as Magni. |
| Louis Cunnigham | Modi | Amazon’s overview spells the actor’s surname “Cunnigham.” |
| Evelyn Miller | Gna | Announced as Gna. |
Names and roles in the table follow Amazon’s official series overview. Its spellings of “Thurd” and “Cunnigham” are retained here rather than silently corrected.
Who plays Kratos—and why did the actor change?
Dave Bautista is the current announced Kratos. Ryan Hurst was announced for the role earlier in 2026, and appeared with Vinson in TheWrap’s February first-look coverage. Variety reported on August 21, 2026, that Hurst sustained an on-set bicep injury, the studios decided to recast the role, and Bautista closed the deal. The report said Vinson remained attached as Atreus.

TheWrap’s February report and its first-look image reflect the earlier casting, not the current lineup. Variety also reported that scenes featuring Hurst would need to be reshot after Bautista joined. Variety’s August 21 report explains the change; TheWrap’s February first-look coverage documents the earlier announcement.
How the live-action cast relates to the games
The series centers on the journey of Kratos and his son Atreus to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother. Amazon says the adaptation closely follows the last two God of War games: God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök (2022), as identified in GameSpot’s series-and-game chronology.

Seeing a familiar character name in the cast does not mean the TV actor is the same performer heard or seen in the games. The confirmed exception relevant here is Alastair Duncan, who voiced Mimir in the games and is listed as Mimir in the series. The available cast information does not establish a game-performance counterpart for every TV role, so it is more accurate to compare each actor with the character rather than claim a complete actor-to-game-performer mapping.

- Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have ordered two seasons. The series is co-produced with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
- Ronald D. Moore is showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Frederick E.O. Toye directs the first two episodes.
- Amazon’s current overview says production is underway. TheWrap reported that production began in February 2026, and Variety later reported filming in Vancouver; those are dated reports, while Amazon is the source for the current status.
- Amazon has not announced a premiere date in its series overview. Prime Video is the announced platform, but a release window or streaming date has not been stated there.
Amazon describes Kratos as having vanquished foes “over the course of 10 wildly successful games.” That is Amazon’s franchise-wide wording, not a count of mainline entries. TheWrap reported that the first God of War game came out in March 2005.
