The criticism is understandable, but the midseason finale does not settle the case. In the two-part Christmas episode, Ghosts returns to a familiar engine: a holiday disruption, Flower possessing Sam, and comic fallout from Sam’s relationship with the ghosts. That repetition can make Season 5 feel as if it is circling old ground. Yet the same episode introduces the Others, and CBS’s later finale descriptions put Woodstone’s future at stake. Whether the season is on autopilot depends on how much weight you give its recurring comic setup versus its larger storylines.
Why the Christmas finale can feel familiar
“It’s a Wonderful Christmas Carol,” the two-part Season 5 midseason finale, was scheduled for December 18, 2025. In the story, Sam’s Christmas Eve television interview takes an unexpected turn when Flower possesses her. Sam’s angry wish to lose her ability to see ghosts then drives the second part. TVLine’s episode description lays out the setup and its consequences (TVLine’s 2025 fall-finale schedule and episode descriptions).
The ingredients are recognizably Ghosts: a special occasion, a ghost’s intervention in Sam’s life, and a comic supernatural complication. Familiarity is part of a sitcom’s appeal, but a recurring device can start to feel like a substitute for movement when a major holiday story again turns on possession and its consequences.
A title-matching video essay from Veiled Secrets, published January 5, 2026, argues that this repetition makes Season 5 feel stagnant. That is a critical interpretation, not an established fact about the show’s writing or audience response. The finale provides a concrete reason for the argument; it does not prove that every episode, or the season as a whole, is repeating itself (Veiled Secrets’ Season 5 critique).

The counterpoint: the episode also opens a new thread
The midseason finale introduced the Others through Patience. TVLine’s December 23, 2025 preview described the group as a continuing mystery and reported co-showrunner Joe Wiseman teasing their arrival. That supports a more complicated reading of the episode: it uses a familiar possession-centered holiday plot while also establishing a supernatural thread that extends beyond the Christmas story (TVLine’s Season 5B preview).
The introduction of a thread is not the same as proof that its execution succeeds. It does, however, matter when judging whether the season is merely repeating itself. A familiar comic mechanism and an expanding mystery can coexist; the question is whether the new material meaningfully develops the show’s world rather than simply adding another tease.

What CBS’s May finale descriptions add
CBS’s official descriptions for the two-part Season 5 finale shift the focus to Woodstone’s longer-term fate. In “Up the Creek,” Sam, Jay, and the ghosts join forces to protect the mansion by securing its place in history. In “Across the Pond,” a trip abroad could determine Woodstone’s fate, while a career opportunity takes Sam out of town. Both episodes were scheduled for May 21, 2026. The descriptions establish the broad stakes, but do not by themselves show how the plots resolve or how successful the season’s build-up is (CBS Entertainment’s official Ghosts releases).
Those stakes complicate the autopilot charge. A season whose finale puts the mansion’s historical standing and future at risk is not framed solely around returning to a self-contained holiday gag. But high-stakes descriptions are not a verdict on the episodes: the useful question is whether the season connects those developments to its weekly comedy in a way that feels consequential.

So, is Season 5 running on autopilot?
The strongest case for “yes” is specific: the Christmas midseason finale again builds around possession and the comic consequences of Sam’s supernatural connection. If that familiar structure feels like a loop rather than a fresh variation, the criticism lands.
The strongest case against a season-wide verdict is also specific: the finale introduces the Others, and CBS’s May finale descriptions point toward a larger effort to preserve Woodstone and determine its fate. Those developments suggest forward motion, though their existence alone does not establish how well the season handles them.

On the available evidence, “autopilot” is a plausible reaction to the midseason finale’s repeated device, not a conclusive description of all of Season 5. The season’s broader mysteries and mansion-centered stakes give viewers a reason to wait before deciding whether familiar comedy has become stagnation.
