Spoilers for the Season 2 finale and Season 3 premiere of Ghosts. The Season 3 premiere identifies Flower, played by Sheila Carrasco, as the ghost missing after the cliffhanger. The other characters presume she has been “sucked off”—the show’s euphemism for moving on to the afterlife—but the episode does not show her departure. Co-showrunners Joe Wiseman and Joe Port explained that the choice grew from both production circumstances and a desire to give the loss real consequences.
Why did the writers choose Flower?
The writers had not decided which ghost would disappear when they wrote the Season 2 finale’s cliffhanger. Joe Wiseman told TVLine that they had leading candidates and a favorite, but later discussed whether a period of limited availability for an actor could be incorporated into the story. Carrasco had welcomed a daughter ahead of Season 3 production, according to TVLine’s account. The writers considered different ways forward and chose to use the circumstances in the story.

That production consideration was not the only factor. Port said the departure had to affect the household and its central characters, rather than fall on a ghost whose absence would barely register. “We wanted the departure to be someone significant, someone that would have ramifications in the house and for all the ghosts, and for Sam and Jay, and not to have it be just a punch pull,” he told TVLine.
What does Flower’s apparent departure mean for the characters?
In “The Owl,” Flower’s absence becomes a story about loss rather than a quick explanation of the cliffhanger. The ghosts hold a memorial, and Thor grieves the loss of his lover and friend. Jay is affected too, even though he never saw Flower. The episode’s reactions show that a ghost moving on can be both a hoped-for outcome and a painful one for those left behind, as Den of Geek’s recap describes.

Wiseman told TVLine that the ghosts respond in different ways: some feel jealousy, while Thor is especially sad. Their reactions complicate the idea that moving on is simply a happy ending. It may be what the ghosts want for themselves, but another ghost’s apparent departure still means someone is gone from their daily lives.

No. The premiere does not show Flower being taken, and Port did not confirm that she had moved on permanently. Asked about her fate, he said, “We’re not saying exactly where this is headed,” and indicated that twists remained possible. He also said the show was not declaring this the last viewers would see of Flower. The premiere establishes what the characters believe at that point; it does not settle her ultimate fate.
