Spoilers for “Trojan,” the Season 2 finale of Gen V. Cipher was never the real mastermind: Thomas Godolkin survived the 1967 laboratory fire by taking Compound V1, then used his mind-control power to operate through Doug, the man viewers knew as Dean Cipher. Marie and her friends stop Godolkin’s assault on Godolkin University, but the reveal comes so late that the show has little time to develop him as a character before the climactic fight ends.

What happens in the Gen V Season 2 finale?

Season 2, Episode 8, “Trojan,” returns to the 1967 lab fire and reveals that Thomas Godolkin survived by taking Compound V1. His mind-control ability let him act through Doug, who appeared to be Dean Cipher. After Marie heals Godolkin, restoring his body and allowing him to act directly, he turns his attention to the students and his vision for Godolkin University.

Godolkin tests and brutalizes students he considers weak, while trying to control Marie and pursuing a larger plan. Meanwhile, Doug is revealed as more than a sinister disguise: he is a controlled person with his own grief and humanity. Polarity takes him for medical help, but Black Noir II kills Doug along the way.

Marie also repairs her relationship with Cate and heals Cate’s powers. As Godolkin’s violence escalates, Marie, Cate, Emma, Sam, Jordan and their allies confront him. The resulting fight is bloody and chaotic; Marie’s powers are central to the group’s victory, and Godolkin is defeated.

Is Thomas Godolkin dead?

The finale shows the students overcoming Godolkin in the confrontation, but the available episode coverage does not establish a definitive on-screen death. It is safest to say that he is defeated, rather than claim the ending confirms he is dead. The immediate threat to the students is stopped; the larger implications of his survival, his ability to control others and his ambitions remain part of the franchise’s story.

Why the Godolkin reveal makes the showdown feel rushed

The main weakness is not a lack of scale. The season spends much of its time building the Cipher mystery, then identifies Thomas Godolkin as the power behind it shortly before the finale dispatches him. Once he is physically present, the story moves quickly from explanation to confrontation and defeat. That leaves limited room for viewers to understand him as an independent character, rather than as the answer to a puzzle.

James Preston Poole’s But Why Tho? recap argues that the climax is unsatisfying for a villain viewers have only just met “for real.” It also points to a performance challenge: Ethan Slater’s Godolkin can feel like an impression of Hamish Linklater’s Cipher, and the late change in performers makes the villain’s climax harder to settle into. The A.V. Club’s review of “Trojan” similarly describes the episode as both necessary and anticlimactic, wishing the story had given Godolkin and his partnership with Sister Sage more room.

There is a counterargument: the finale delivers a large-scale brawl, gives Marie and the other students an active role in stopping the threat, and creates momentum for what comes next. The Television Academy’s interview with showrunner Michele Fazekas also makes clear that the season’s ending changed after Chance Perdomo’s death. Fazekas said, “Part of [those changes] were driven by the death of Chance Perdomo, and it really did change how the [season] ended. One of the really big things was — I didn’t want to kill anybody else. We already had someone actually die in real life, and a character in the show die [as a result]. I was very adamant that we’re not going to kill anybody else, because it seems so insignificant in light of what really happened.” That context matters, but it does not by itself resolve the pacing or characterization concerns.

What the finale means for The Boys

After the university confrontation, the students flee Godolkin and Vought. Annabeth joins them, and Starlight and A-Train appear, linking the fugitives to the resistance against Homelander. That ending shifts the group from a campus-level fight into the wider The Boys conflict: the students are no longer only trying to survive Godolkin University, but are connected to a broader struggle.

The bridge is effective as franchise setup, though it also means the finale’s closing movement points outward from the immediate campus story. Fazekas told the Television Academy that the future story was not completely fixed at the time of the interview, so the scene signals a direction rather than guaranteeing exactly how the next chapter will unfold.

The finale’s central irony: the “weak” students save the day

Godolkin’s hierarchy depends on deciding which supes are valuable and which are expendable. The students he sees as weak or poorly powered become essential to stopping him. As Fazekas explained to the Television Academy: “We knew that we had to develop Godolkin’s ultimate goal,” followed by, “And if his ultimate goal is to cull all the superheroes that he felt were taking too many resources — and just focus on the ‘great’ ones that fit his definition of [the word] — then it naturally came to us that the ones that have the ‘stupid’ powers saved the day.” That reversal gives the brawl a thematic point beyond spectacle, even as Godolkin himself gets less time than the idea behind him deserved.

Episode details and reception

“Trojan” is Gen V Season 2, Episode 8. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page lists an October 22, 2025 air date, a TV-MA rating and Prime Video as the viewing service. When accessed on October 4, 2026, the page showed a 67% Tomatometer based on six reviews; that is a dated critic-review snapshot, not an audience poll or a permanent score. The range of reactions reflects the finale’s split: some see an effective setup for the franchise’s next turn, while others find the villain’s payoff underdeveloped.
