In October 2024, Good Morning America weatherman Sam Champion said he had basal cell carcinoma beneath his left eye and underwent Mohs surgery. The spot looked small to him, but the cancer extended farther beneath the skin than its surface appearance suggested. His account is a reminder to pay attention to changing skin and seek medical evaluation—not to try to diagnose a spot yourself.
What Sam Champion disclosed about his skin cancer
In a report published October 18, 2024, Good Morning America said Champion noticed a spot beneath his left eye and was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma (BCC). He told the program that although the spot appeared small, the cancer extended farther underneath. He had Mohs surgery in his dermatologist’s office in early October and returned to the show nearly two weeks later with a small scar. GMA identified his dermatologist as Anthony Rossi of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Champion had experienced skin cancer before. In its October 2024 account, The Skin Cancer Foundation reported that his first bout was at age 26 and that he had multiple skin cancers removed. The Foundation said he was surprised by how the 2024 spot looked. Those details provide context for his account; they do not establish his medical status after the 2024 reports.
Why Mohs surgery was used near his eye
Mohs surgery removes cancer in thin layers, examining tissue as the procedure progresses. The aim is to remove the cancer while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. The Skin Cancer Foundation describes Mohs as a staged procedure often used in cosmetically important areas, including around the eyes, nose and lips, where conserving tissue matters.

The Foundation says BCC usually grows slowly and rarely spreads, but an untreated lesion can grow and cause disfigurement; in highly unusual cases, it can be deadly. It estimates that 3.6 million BCC cases are diagnosed in the United States each year. That is the Foundation’s 2024 estimate, not a newly measured 2026 figure.
What to watch for—and when to seek care
BCC can appear in different ways. A spot, sore, patch or bump that does not heal or that changes may deserve professional attention. Appearance alone cannot establish whether a mark is cancer: a list of warning signs or a photograph is not a substitute for an examination.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends seeing a board-certified dermatologist about a new or suspicious spot, or one that is changing, itching or bleeding. Champion put the broader point plainly on GMA: “But right now, we have to keep our eye on our skin, our hands on our skin, be very vigilant and notice any unusual spots, and if those spots start to change, immediately get care.”
Practical ways to reduce UV exposure
Sun protection does not eliminate every risk, but it can reduce exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The AAD’s guidance, updated August 15, 2025, recommends combining shade, protective clothing and sunscreen:

- Choose shade. Take breaks out of direct sun when possible.
- Cover exposed skin. Wear long sleeves and pants, a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses. The AAD suggests choosing clothing with a UPF label.
- Use sunscreen as directed. Choose broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, apply enough to cover exposed skin, and reapply every two hours outdoors or after swimming or sweating.
- Check your skin regularly. Pay attention to new or changing spots and arrange a professional assessment when something concerns you.
Protection matters throughout the year, not only on hot, cloudless days. The CDC’s June 17, 2026 guidance says UV rays can reach people in cloudy and cool weather and can reflect off water, cement, sand and snow. It also recommends avoiding indoor tanning.

Champion emphasized that skin cancer is not limited to one age or skin tone. On GMA, he said: “No matter how old you are … no matter what your skin tone, your skin type, your skin color, they’re cutting skin cancer off everybody, so it’s everybody’s issue.” The ellipsis is part of the wording published by GMA.

The AAD’s May 1, 2026 Practice Safe Sun Survey release found that 57% of Americans regularly use sunscreen, while one-third of surveyed Americans reported a sunburn in the past year. The release also said more than 16 million adults reported reducing or stopping sunscreen use because of online claims. These are survey findings, not individual risk estimates.
