Spoilers for Foundation season 3, episode 8. Officially titled “Skin in the Game,” the 46-minute episode brings its central conflicts to a head: Gaal leaves the Second Foundation to face the Mule, Brother Day is sentenced to death in Mycogen, and Dusk rejects a plan to surrender Trantor. What happens in Foundation season 3, episode 8?
“Skin in the Game” cuts between five connected crises. The Mule is pressing the Foundation for information about Gaal and the Second Foundation; Empire is debating whether to yield Trantor; and Gaal is preparing to risk herself to stop the Mule. Meanwhile, Brother Day faces a trial over the Cleon dynasty’s past, and the presumed-dead Brother Dawn is revealed to be alive in the Mule’s custody.
Apple’s official synopsis sums up the episode’s main threads: “Gaal and the Second Foundation reckon with the fall of New Terminus. Day faces judgment on Mycogen. Dusk’s ascension looms.” The events below are recounted in Will Borger’s spoiler recap for But Why Tho?
Why does Hari let the Mule leave the Vault?
The Mule demands that the Vault’s copy of Hari tell him about Gaal and the Second Foundation. When Hari recognizes that the Mule is asking for knowledge he does not possess, the Mule threatens the Vault itself. Hari responds by activating the null field, which repels the Mule and demonstrates that the Vault remains a force he cannot simply overpower.

Hari then allows the Mule to live. The episode suggests that this is a deliberate choice: Hari may see some future use for his enemy, even as the Mule remains an immediate threat. It leaves the relationship unresolved rather than turning the encounter into a straightforward victory.
What happens to Brother Day in Mycogen?
In Mycogen, the Inheritors put Day on trial for the inherited crimes of the Cleon dynasty. Their case is shaped by the group’s faith and its account of the robots and Daneel, a name formerly used by Demerzel.

A relic responds to Day’s song by asking for a handshake, but the moment does not change the verdict. Sunmaster-18 finds Day guilty and sentences him to Remediation, which the episode presents as a death sentence. Day falls into the pit as punishment, while the wider political crisis continues without him.
Is Brother Dawn dead in “Skin in the Game”?
No. Although Dawn is believed dead, he is alive, gravely injured, and being held by the Mule alongside Bayta. The Mule tries to force the location of Gaal from Dawn, but does not obtain the information he wants.

How the episode’s parallel decisions build toward war
The episode’s conflicts differ in scale, but each asks who will accept the cost of protecting—or preserving—an institution. Gaal leaves the Second Foundation’s relative safety while arranging its evacuation. Dusk refuses to save a reduced Empire by surrendering Trantor. Day is judged for the dynasty he represents, while Hari chooses not to eliminate the Mule when he has the chance.
Those choices make “Skin in the Game” a setup chapter rather than a resolution. The Novacula has not been deployed, the Mule remains active, and Gaal’s confrontation is only beginning as the episode closes.
