After Karla Sofía Gascón was nominated for a leading-actress Oscar for Emilia Pérez on January 23, 2025, old social-media posts attributed to her account resurfaced, including comments reported as disparaging Islam and George Floyd and mocking the 2021 Oscars. Gascón apologized and deactivated her X account; the episode drew criticism from the film’s director and co-star and changed Netflix’s awards-campaign arrangements. It was one part of a larger story: criticism of the film’s portrayal of Mexico and trans identity had already emerged, and a separate dispute involving fellow nominee Fernanda Torres preceded the posts controversy.
What started the Gascón posts controversy?
Old posts resurfaced after her Oscar nomination
The posts were written years before the film’s awards campaign. After Gascón’s January 23, 2025 nomination, news reports brought them back into public discussion. The Guardian reported examples dating as far back as 2016; the Associated Press described some as denigrating Islam and George Floyd. Reports also highlighted a post mocking the 2021 Oscars for its diversity. These were reported posts from her account, not remarks made as part of Emilia Pérez’s publicity campaign.
Gascón apologized and deactivated her X account
Gascón apologized to people hurt by the posts, saying: “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain.” The Associated Press reported that her X account had been deactivated by Friday, January 31. Gascón said she was closing it because of what she described as a campaign of hate and misinformation affecting her and her family. Her account of harassment and its effects was her own; it should not be treated as independently established fact.
The Fernanda Torres exchange was a separate episode
Before the posts story, Gascón had drawn criticism for interview remarks about people she said were working with fellow Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres and criticizing Emilia Pérez. Gascón later said she was speaking about social-media toxicity and hate speech, not Torres or people directly associated with her, whom she described as supportive. This dispute was distinct from the resurfaced posts.

How did the film’s director, co-star and Netflix respond?
Director Jacques Audiard called the posts “absolutely hateful and worthy of being hated,” and said, “Because what Karla Sofía said is inexcusable.” He also said their relationship had been affected. Co-star Zoe Saldaña said she was sad and disappointed.
In February 2025, Netflix removed Gascón from campaign materials. Contemporary reporting also said the company had stopped funding her travel to awards events. Those reports describe campaign decisions at that time, not a permanent policy. On February 14, Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria said the controversy had diverted attention from the many people who made the film.

What criticism of Emilia Pérez was separate from the posts?
The film faced objections to its creative choices before Gascón’s old posts resurfaced. In January, after criticism in Mexico of the film’s depiction of the country, Audiard apologized and said the work was not intended to be realistic. The Guardian reported that GLAAD criticized the central character’s representation, calling it “a profoundly retrograde portrayal of a trans woman.” That is GLAAD’s assessment of the film, not an uncontested description.
These debates concerned the film’s representation of Mexico and a trans woman; they were not caused by Gascón’s posts. Audiard reflected on the criticism by saying, “Cinema doesn’t provide answers, it only asks questions. But maybe the questions in Emilia Pérez are incorrect.” The controversy over representation and the backlash over the posts were related in public discussion, but they were different criticisms.
