What does Julian Fellowes say the divorce means?
Creator Julian Fellowes frames acceptance of divorce as part of a broader shift in the world Downton Abbey depicts. Speaking to PBS NewsHour, he said: “For me, the acceptance of divorce is really about accepting that the Victorian age is finished and that they have moved on to a new world.” The comment situates Mary’s story within the series’ portrayal of changing social expectations.
In a Focus Features interview with Fellowes and director Simon Curtis, the divorce is discussed as part of the film’s character and family narrative. Focus Features describes the movie as the concluding chapter of the screen story.
