Don’t Move has a clean, high-stakes hook: a grieving woman has minutes to escape after a stranger injects her with a paralytic. But a ticking clock can only create so much tension when the obstacles feel repetitive and the central performance has so little room to move. Kelsey Asbille gives Iris’s physical struggle the film’s clearest point of interest; the thriller around her does not consistently make that struggle gripping.
What is Don’t Move about?
Directed by Brian Netto and Adam Schindler, this 2024 Netflix horror thriller follows Iris (Kelsey Asbille), a woman grieving the death of her son. In an isolated forest, she meets Richard (Finn Wittrock), a stranger whose apparent concern conceals a threat: he injects her with a paralytic. Iris must run, hide and fight as control of her body slips away.
Netflix Tudum describes the countdown as 20 minutes before the agent takes effect. That premise gives the movie a clear engine: each delay or encounter can make Iris less capable of resisting. The film’s challenge is to turn that shrinking window into escalating suspense rather than a series of variations on the same predicament.
Does the countdown create suspense?
At its best, the limited-mobility setup makes ordinary actions feel consequential. Iris cannot rely on a conventional chase or fight, so the threat comes from the gap between what she needs to do and what her body will still let her do. That constraint is the film’s strongest idea.

It is also a narrow one. As the countdown proceeds, suspense depends on each new obstacle changing the balance of power or forcing Iris to improvise. When those turns feel like another interruption on the way to the next escape attempt, the ticking clock becomes a reminder of the movie’s repetition rather than a source of urgency. The premise promises relentless escalation; the execution does not always sustain it.
Can Kelsey Asbille carry the film?
Asbille faces a distinctive acting problem: Iris’s movement becomes increasingly restricted, while the audience still needs to read fear, calculation and grief. Her physical restraint gives the performance its focus. She makes the loss of agency legible without turning the role into a simple display of panic, and Iris’s struggle is more affecting when the film lets the character’s bereavement register alongside the immediate danger.

That emotional dimension is not developed as deeply as the survival mechanics. Iris’s grief gives the premise personal stakes, but it can feel more like the reason the story begins than a feeling the thriller keeps exploring. Netflix Tudum quoted Asbille describing the film as both “propulsive” and “very personal”; the personal side is the part the script most needed to make more fully present.
Is Finn Wittrock’s antagonist convincing?
Richard’s initial charm matters because manipulation is part of the danger: Iris has to recognize the threat while she is already vulnerable. Wittrock can shift the encounter from apparent reassurance toward menace, giving the premise a human antagonist as well as a physical countdown.

The character’s effectiveness depends on the credibility of those shifts and of Iris’s opportunities to respond. When a turn feels required mainly to set up the next peril, Richard becomes less unsettling and more a mechanism for keeping the plot in motion. That weakens the central contest between predator and survivor.
How did critics and viewers respond?
Rotten Tomatoes’ snapshot accessed October 5, 2026, showed a 74% Tomatometer from 50 reviews and a 40% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 ratings. Those figures are a dated snapshot, not a measure of whether every viewer will enjoy the film, and the critic–audience gap suggests the stripped-down approach landed differently with the two groups.

The site’s critics consensus calls it a “slight but effective thriller” that gets mileage from its limitations. In a positive review excerpt, Empire Magazine’s Ben Travis praised its “Pacy thrills” on October 29, 2024; Variety’s Peter Debruge opened a contrasting excerpt on October 26, 2024, with “Conspicuously subpar…” The split reflects the film’s central trade-off: its compact premise can be an efficient genre exercise, but viewers wanting sustained momentum or more convincing turns may find the limitations more noticeable than the ingenuity.

Consider it if a contained survival thriller, a defined countdown and an unusual physical performance challenge appeal to you. Asbille is the main reason to give it a chance. If you need each plot turn to feel fully earned or want the grief at the center of the story to receive sustained attention, this is a less persuasive pick. Its high-concept setup is easy to grasp; the tension it generates is less consistent.

Don’t Move was released on Netflix on October 25, 2024. Rotten Tomatoes lists its runtime as 1 hour 32 minutes and its rating as R for some strong violence and language.
