Iris’s “Thank you” is both a final taunt and an acknowledgment that the fight to survive has awakened her will to live. It does not mean she forgives Richard or is grateful for his violence.
What happens at the end of Don’t Move?
As Richard’s family is about to arrive, he takes Iris out onto a lake in a rowboat, intending to kill her. Her movement is returning. She stabs him in the face with his hunting knife and shoots him with his gun; he falls into the water. Iris struggles back to shore as the damaged boat sinks, and Richard also makes it out of the lake, bleeding from his wounds. She gives him one last “Thank you.”
The film’s ending does not establish unequivocally that Richard dies. The sourced accounts leave him gravely wounded and bleeding, rather than confirming his death.
Why does Iris thank Richard?
The line has two meanings at once. On the surface, Iris turns Richard’s own words back on him as he lies gravely wounded: it is a bitter kiss-off, not a sincere expression of gratitude for what he did.

At a deeper level, the ordeal has forced Iris to fight for her life after she had stopped wanting to live. Actor Kelsey Asbille described the moment as Iris choosing to live, not merely survive. Producer Sam Raimi interpreted the line as “Thank you for inspiring me to live again.” Co-director Brian Netto said it is double-edged: Iris is sticking it to Richard while recognizing that the fight has brought her back to a desire to live. These are the filmmakers’ interpretations, not evidence that Iris excuses Richard or that his violence was beneficial.
How does the line echo Richard’s story about Chloe?
Earlier, Richard tells Iris that his girlfriend Chloe died in a car accident. He claims that watching her die revealed the killer inside him, and says “Thank you” were his last words to her. Iris’s final line echoes that claimed farewell, giving it a cruel reversal: Richard’s words become hers to use against him.

But Chloe’s death and Richard’s account of what it meant are presented through Richard’s own explanation, not independently verified fact. Co-director Adam Schindler cautioned that viewers should not assume Richard is telling the whole truth, though there may be “glimmers of truth” in what he says.

Iris begins the film grieving her young son Mateo and at a breaking point. Richard approaches her at the cliff where Mateo died, appears to offer understanding, then injects her with a paralytic and kidnaps her. As she struggles to move and repeatedly survives, the literal loss of control over her body mirrors the emotional paralysis the filmmakers associate with her grief.

Netflix’s ending explainer says the drug takes 20 minutes to set in and an hour to wear off within the film’s plot. Those are fictional plot mechanics, not medical guidance. The story’s emotional point is Iris’s decision to fight again; it does not make Richard’s manipulation or violence anything other than his responsibility.
