Jennifer Lawrence gives Die, My Love its most compelling force: a performance that can turn from stillness to volatility, aggression, and desire without making Grace easy to explain. Lynne Ramsay’s Cannes Competition film is a deliberately disorienting portrait of a marriage in crisis, not a reassuring account of new parenthood. Its intensity puts Lawrence at the center; its abrasive style may leave viewers divided.
What is Die, My Love about?
Grace and Jackson, a married couple with a newborn, move into an old country house. As Grace’s postpartum depression deepens, the film follows her experience toward what the Associated Press described as “darkly hallucinatory extremes.” That describes the character and the film’s presentation of her inner life; it should not be mistaken for a clinical account of postpartum illness or a universal portrait of motherhood.

Ramsay adapts the film from Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 novel. The literary origin matters because the story is less interested in laying out a neat chain of marital disputes than in drawing the viewer into Grace’s subjective, unstable point of view. Ramsay translates that interiority into image, sound, and performance rather than smoothing it into a conventional domestic drama.
Is Jennifer Lawrence good in Die, My Love?
Yes: Lawrence is the film’s strongest reason to watch. She gives Grace a volatile range—silence, agitation, aggression, and desire—without reducing her to a single symptom or making every action legible. The performance’s force comes partly from its refusal to offer a safe interpretive distance. Viewers are asked to remain with Grace even when her behavior unsettles them.

Lawrence told the AP in Cannes that it was difficult to separate her imagined responses from Grace’s: “It was really hard to separate what I would do as opposed to what (Grace) would do.” That is an actor’s account of approaching a role, not evidence that Grace’s experience represents other parents. The performance feels most alive in precisely that tension between intimate identification and a character whose inner life cannot be neatly explained.
How does Robert Pattinson’s Jackson shape the marriage story?
Pattinson gives Jackson a meaningful counterpoint to Lawrence’s intensity. He is not presented as an expert capable of diagnosing or resolving Grace’s condition; he is a husband whose understanding is limited and whose responses cannot simply restore the couple’s earlier life. As Pattinson put it at the Cannes press conference, according to The Guardian: “He’s not a mental health professional. He’s just hoping that the relationship will go back to what it was.”

That gap in understanding gives the marriage its pressure. Jackson’s hope for a return to normal meets Grace’s increasingly unstable experience, and the film does not make either a tidy solution to the other. Their relationship is not just background to a portrait of one person in distress: it is where care, frustration, distance, and desire collide.
What is Ramsay’s style like?
Ramsay makes the film sensory and disorienting rather than measured and explanatory. The approach suits a story built around an increasingly fractured perspective, but it also makes the experience abrasive. Le Monde described the film as a psychologically horrific portrait marked by violent, sexual, and sensory excess. That is one critical response, not proof of a universal verdict; the film’s intensity is likely to be its dividing line.

For some viewers, the form makes Grace’s inner world palpable. For others, the same force may feel distancing, especially if they want a restrained marital drama that offers clear emotional signposts. The adaptation’s central challenge is to make inward, poetic material cinematic without translating it into an orderly explanation. Ramsay chooses expression over reassurance.

It is worth watching if you want a formally daring psychological drama and are willing to spend time inside an uncomfortable, unstable point of view. Lawrence’s performance gives the film a gripping center, while Pattinson’s Jackson makes the strain on the marriage more than a one-sided portrait. If you prefer a calm or reassuring depiction of early parenthood, the film’s violence, sexuality, and sensory excess may be a poor fit.

Die, My Love was listed by the Festival de Cannes in the 2025 Official Selection, In Competition. The festival lists Ramsay as director, Lawrence as Grace, Pattinson as Jackson, and a running time of 118 minutes. The BFI later reported a UK cinema date of 7 November 2025; that date has passed. In May 2025, the AP reported that MUBI had acquired US and multiple-territory distribution rights, but that historical announcement does not establish current streaming availability in a particular country.
