Damsel is a 2024 Netflix fantasy-adventure built around a sharp reversal: Elodie thinks she is marrying a prince, but his family intends to sacrifice her to a dragon. Millie Bobby Brown gives the cave-survival story its strongest source of momentum. The film is more convincing as a star-led fight to stay alive than as a fresh or subtle fairy tale.
What is Damsel about?
Elodie agrees to marry a prince, only to discover that the royal family means to use her life to repay an ancient debt. They cast her into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, leaving her to find a way out with her wits and whatever strength she can summon. That premise moves the film away from a conventional rescue story and into a survival adventure.

Netflix’s official listing describes the sacrifice and Elodie’s struggle to survive. The film stars Brown alongside Ray Winstone and Robin Wright; the listing also names Angela Bassett, Nick Robinson and Shohreh Aghdashloo. Netflix’s Tudum guide, published March 25, 2024, identifies Juan Carlos Fresnadillo as director and Dan Mazeau as the screenplay writer.
Does Millie Bobby Brown carry the film?
Brown is the dramatic center: much of the story follows Elodie alone in the cave, making her physical presence and reactions essential to the film’s forward motion. Netflix Tudum quotes Brown describing the character as “a damsel who doesn’t need to be saved.” That idea suits the survival setup, where Elodie must make decisions and endure the consequences rather than wait for a rescuer.

#1 Best Overall
- Blu-ray
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus likewise calls Brown an appealing action hero whose gutsy performance helps offset the film’s weaker elements. That praise is not universal. Elsa Fernández-Santos, writing for EL PAÍS on March 8, 2024, was more critical of Brown’s performance and argued that the physical cave sequences show Fresnadillo’s strengths more clearly than the rest of the movie.
Where the story and effects work—and where they do not
The cave gives Damsel a clear practical engine: Elodie has to read her surroundings, manage danger and keep going. That makes the film most effective when it concentrates on her immediate predicament. The fairy-tale reversal is easy to grasp, and the dragon gives the survival plot a vivid, tangible threat.
Rank #2
- De Gaulle [Blu-Ray]
- Easy to use
- Durable and strong
The weaker stretches lean on familiar genre beats and explain them too plainly. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus notes an underpowered story and effects that can be unconvincing. Fernández-Santos also objects to conspicuous genre references and a dragon that explains too much. Together, those responses point to a real tension: the film wants its heroine’s ordeal to feel immediate, but its dialogue and exposition sometimes make the world feel over-explained.
Is Damsel worth watching?
Yes, if a straightforward fantasy survival adventure led by Brown is what you want. Her performance and the central predicament provide enough momentum to make the film watchable, especially when Elodie is navigating the cave. It is a less satisfying choice if you want a particularly original fairy-tale story, restrained exposition or consistently convincing effects. This is a qualified recommendation, not a claim that critics agree on every element.
