Its sharpest joke comes when Trump holds up two differently sized Tic Tac boxes as an apparent example of inflation: Lydic points out that they are simply two sizes of breath mints.
Which Daily Show segment is it?
The segment is titled “Trump Attempts Intellectual Economy Speech, Trashes Biden, Harris, Tic Tacs Instead.” The Daily Show posted it on August 15, 2024, with host Desi Lydic watching and commenting on Trump’s remarks. The show’s official video description frames the speech as an “intellectual” address on economic policy that goes off the rails.
What happened in the Tic Tac joke?
Trump delivered the speech in North Carolina on August 14, 2024. A contemporaneous Mashable report republished by Yahoo Entertainment says he held up two boxes of Tic Tacs, one larger and one smaller, as an apparent inflation example. Lydic’s response was: “That is not an example of inflation, that’s just two different sizes of breath mints.”
The joke depends on the gap between the example and the economic point it is meant to illustrate: the boxes differ in size, but that comparison by itself does not show that prices have risen or that consumers receive less for the same price. The segment treats the moment as comic misdirection, not as a detailed examination of inflation or Trump’s economic proposals.

Why the speech became comedy material
Trump had promised an “intellectual” speech about the economy, but the reported remarks also turned to political opponents and other subjects. The Daily Show’s description says Lydic’s reaction moves through comments about Joe Biden’s ice cream choices and Kamala Harris’s laugh before reaching the Tic Tacs. The contrast between the promised subject and those detours provides the segment’s framing.
Paramount+’s official weekly listing also identifies the speech among The Daily Show’s coverage for that week. The available accounts establish the setup and the Tic Tac punchline, but they do not provide an official full transcript of the speech or segment.
