Aldis Hodge is the strongest reason to watch Cross. He gives James Patterson’s detective the intelligence, emotional weight and personal vulnerability that make Alex Cross more than a crime-solving machine. The series does not always escape familiar crime-thriller conventions, but Hodge makes its central character feel specific and worth following.
What is Cross about?
Cross is a Washington, D.C. crime drama centered on homicide detective Alex Cross, whose personal struggles threaten both his career and his life, according to Prime Video’s series listing. The show is based on James Patterson’s Alex Cross novels. Skydance describes the character as both a DC Metro detective and a forensic psychologist, and identifies Hodge as Detective Alex Cross (Skydance’s series page).

That combination matters to the show’s identity: Cross is meant to investigate what happened and think through the people involved. The series is most compelling when Hodge makes that work feel like an expression of character rather than a procedural checklist.
Why Aldis Hodge works as Alex Cross
Hodge’s performance gives the role a persuasive balance of authority and inwardness. Cross has to command a room as a detective, but the character’s appeal also depends on an ability to read people and on the personal costs of doing so. Hodge makes those dimensions feel compatible: intelligence does not crowd out vulnerability, and emotional strain does not make Cross seem less capable.

That is the sense in which the title’s “perfect” is most defensible: Hodge feels well matched to this interpretation of Cross. It is an evaluative judgment about the performance, not a claim that there is one definitive screen version of the character. The Television Academy’s 2024 feature discusses Hodge’s approach and the adaptation’s creative choices, while TheWrap and RogerEbert.com also highlight Hodge among the show’s strengths.
How the series uses Cross’s psychology and detective work
Cross’s forensic-psychology background distinguishes the character from a detective defined only by action or instinct. The premise invites the series to connect investigation with an understanding of behavior: the work is not just about finding evidence, but about interpreting people. Hodge helps sell that intellectual side without turning the role into a display of expertise detached from emotional consequence.
Rank #2
The series also frames Cross’s personal life as part of the pressure surrounding his work, rather than as a separate concern. That tension gives the detective more human stakes. It is central to why Hodge’s performance can lend weight to familiar crime-drama material, even when the surrounding storytelling feels less distinctive.
Does Cross feel fresh, or too familiar?
The critical response is divided in emphasis, not reducible to a single verdict. TheWrap praises the adaptation’s handling of the detective and Hodge’s role; RogerEbert.com likewise treats the lead performance, source material and setting as assets. TV Guide, by contrast, argues that the series plays it too safe (TV Guide’s review). These are individual critics’ judgments, not a measurement of audience opinion.
Rank #3
That tension captures the show’s trade-off. Its familiar crime-thriller elements may make the story accessible, but they can also keep it from feeling as singular as its lead character. If you want an inventive reinvention of the detective format, the conventional choices may frustrate you. If you are drawn to a character-led crime drama and want to see Hodge inhabit a formidable, psychologically minded detective, his work gives the series a strong center.
How does the show relate to James Patterson’s books?
The series is based on Patterson’s Alex Cross book series, but the official descriptions do not identify a particular novel as the direct source for the show. The television character therefore has a literary history without the available evidence supporting a one-to-one adaptation claim. The Television Academy’s 2024 feature places Cross’s television arrival 31 years after his debut in Patterson’s first Alex Cross book.
Rank #4
For a starting point in that history, begin with Along Came a Spider, the novel that introduced the character. Treat it as an entry into the books, not as a confirmed source novel for this series. The show’s creator and showrunner is Ben Watkins, according to About Amazon, so this is a television adaptation shaped for its own format rather than simply a screen transcription of one book.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Cross worth watching?
Yes, especially if Aldis Hodge’s performance is your main reason for tuning in. He gives the detective psychological presence and emotional dimension, and the official premise makes use of both sides of Cross’s identity as investigator and forensic psychologist. The caveat is that the series’ crime-thriller framework can feel familiar, a limitation reflected in TV Guide’s criticism that it plays things safe. The strongest case for watching is Hodge’s portrayal, not a promise that every element of the show breaks new ground.
