Spoilers for the series finale, “No Lessons Learned.” Larry David does briefly receive a prison sentence in the final episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but he does not end up in jail. A juror’s violation of sequestration leads to a mistrial and frees him. The finale then sends Larry and the ensemble home still bickering, while making an unmistakable joke about the ending of Seinfeld.
What happens in “No Lessons Learned”?
The tenth and final episode of season 12, “No Lessons Learned,” brings the season’s Georgia voting-law storyline to court. Larry is on trial after giving Auntie Rae water while she waits in line to vote. What might seem like a small gesture becomes the legal trouble at the center of the finale.
In court, people from Larry’s past take the stand and recount his selfishness and old grievances. The parade of witnesses includes returning characters and guest appearances such as Jerry Seinfeld, Allison Janney, Greg Kinnear, Tracey Ullman, Mocha Joe, Bruce Springsteen, and Alexander Vindman. Their testimony turns the trial into a reckoning with the characters’ history as well as a plot about Larry’s immediate predicament.
Does Larry go to jail?
At first, yes: Larry is found guilty and sentenced to a year in prison. He appears behind bars, where he and Jerry talk about “pants tents,” a callback to the first episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. The scene looks like the finale’s final punishment for Larry.

It is a fake-out. Jerry tells the court that a juror violated sequestration by meeting him outside court. The violation leads to a mistrial, voiding Larry’s sentence and releasing him. So Larry is convicted and sentenced, but the final legal outcome is that he is free.
How does the finale echo the Seinfeld ending?
The courtroom parade deliberately recalls the 1998 Seinfeld finale, in which witnesses revisit the leads’ past behavior and the characters are sentenced to prison. Curb sets up a similar result for Larry, then changes the outcome: the juror’s sequestration violation overturns the apparent ending. Larry and Jerry make the meta joke explicit, saying this would have been a better way to end Seinfeld.
The callback is more than a repeat of the same courtroom device. It lets Larry David revisit a finale he had defended for years while giving Larry a last-minute escape. The Washington Post estimated that 76 million people watched the Seinfeld finale in 1998; that figure is historical context for the reference, not an audience number for Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Why is the finale called “No Lessons Learned”?
The title grows out of a story about Larry resisting a child’s lesson. Executive producer Jeff Schaffer said that the creators realized Larry’s insistence that he never learns a lesson could itself frame the finale. As he told TheWrap after the episode aired, “Let’s just do the ‘Seinfeld’ finale again as this meta joke.”

- Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete First Season He's got it all, a loving wife, good friends, a successful career, a good home. What could go wrong for Larry David? CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM stars "Seinfeld" co-creator Larry David as himself in an unsparing, cinema verite depiction of his life. Featuring real life celebrities playing themselves, the episodes are improvised by the actor
That premise suits the ending: a court may try to teach Larry a lesson, but a technical reversal gets him out of the sentence, and the show does not transform him into a wiser person. The joke is in the mismatch between the gravity of the trial and Larry’s lasting inability—or refusal—to change.
What is the final scene?
The final shot is not another prison gag. Larry, Jerry, and the principal group are on a plane, arguing about shade as the familiar instrumental “Frolic” plays and the episode cuts to black. Schaffer told TheWrap the creators wanted to leave viewers with the ensemble doing what they do best: arguing, with the sense that their dynamic could continue beyond the episode.

That closing beat returns the series to its essential rhythm. The court case ends, but the characters’ petty conflicts do not; the last image is the group still together and still unable to let an argument go.
