The 2024 film is a tense, journalist-centered war thriller that follows reporters through a near-future United States in conflict. Its political ambiguity gives the violence room to unsettle; it can also leave viewers wanting more context.
What is Civil War about?
Written and directed by Alex Garland, Civil War follows a group of journalists traveling from New York toward Washington, D.C., across a country ravaged by conflict. Kirsten Dunst plays Lee, a veteran photojournalist; Cailee Spaeny plays Jessie, a younger photographer. Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley Henderson are fellow journalists on the journey, while Nick Offerman is also among the film’s stars, according to A24’s official film page.

The road trip is the film’s organizing perspective: viewers encounter the war alongside people trying to record it, not through a political briefing that lays out the country’s factions and history. BFI’s interview with Garland and Dunst describes that journey and the film’s journalistic context.
Is it a political movie or mostly a war thriller?
It is both, but its politics are deliberately less explicit than its scenes of danger. Garland told PBS NewsHour, “For me, it categorically is a political film,” and characterized the divide as “extremist versus centrist,” rather than a conventional left-versus-right alignment. That is his account of the film’s intent, not a complete map of its fictional conflict.

- A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor's edge.
The film does not spell out the causes of the war or fully identify which side should be understood as good. Garland said he did not need to spell out those causes; CBS News likewise notes that the story leaves key questions about the war’s origins and moral camps unanswered. The result is an open political frame around a concrete journey through armed conflict.
- If you want a fully explained political scenario: the limited backstory may feel like a gap. The film offers little of the causal or ideological detail that would let viewers neatly classify the factions.
- If you value ambiguity: the missing explanation can keep attention on how ordinary life and reporting are altered by violence, rather than on a single allegorical reading.
- If you want a war thriller: the journey supplies immediate stakes and escalating danger even when the political map remains unclear.
Why put journalists at the center?
The journalists are not just guides through the setting; their work is the film’s main lens on it. Garland told the Associated Press, “What I wanted to do was present journalists as reporters,” and described the film as “just reporting.” His framing allows the story to examine the act of witnessing without turning the reporters into detached explainers of every political cause.

- A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor's edge.
That perspective also raises an ethical question: what does it cost to document violence, and what responsibilities come with making images of it? Garland said he wanted to show journalists as individuals who may be compromised while still holding on to an idea of journalism. Lee and Jessie’s different levels of experience make the work of recording events part of the drama, not merely a profession in the background.
How intense is the film?
Civil War contains sporadic violence, sustained tension and a forceful final act, according to BFI. The Associated Press describes bombings, firefights and executions. Those elements make this a high-tension war film, not simply a reflective drama about political disagreement. A formal content rating is not established by the sources cited here.

Does the film work as a warning?
Garland and members of the cast have described the film as a warning and a prompt for conversation. Dunst told CBS News, “But I do think it’s a warning. I do.” That is the actor’s stated view of the film’s purpose, not a prediction that its fictional events will happen. Because the political causes remain under-explained, the warning is open-ended: viewers are invited to consider the dangers of extremism and conflict without being handed a one-to-one political allegory.

Civil War is most effective if you are comfortable with a film that makes the consequences of conflict vivid while leaving much of its political machinery offscreen. Its reporter-centered perspective gives the journey a human and professional focus, while the ambiguity may frustrate anyone expecting a clear account of how the war began or who represents which ideology. The film is political in Garland’s stated sense, but its primary experience is a tense passage through a country at war.
