The result is a character-centered franchise chapter whose intrigue is clearer than its promise of sustained suspense. This assessment is based on the published synopsis, episode descriptions, interviews, and reception, not a firsthand viewing.
What is Citadel: Diana about?
The Italian-language series is set in Milan in 2030, eight years after the rival syndicate Manticore destroyed the independent spy agency Citadel. Matilda De Angelis plays Diana Cavalieri, a Citadel agent who has spent years embedded inside Manticore. When a possible escape presents itself, she must decide whether to trust Edo Zani (Lorenzo Cervasio), heir to Manticore Italy.
That setup gives the series an immediate double-agent dilemma: Diana must navigate the organization she is infiltrating while judging whether an apparent way out is real. The six-episode first season premiered on Prime Video on October 10, 2024. Catalog availability can vary by territory. Prime Video’s official listing presents the series as part of the Citadel franchise; About Amazon Italia’s launch announcement confirms the premiere date.
Does the spy plot create enough suspense?
The official episode descriptions establish missions involving weapons, rival Manticore factions, and Diana’s effort to build an alliance with Edo. Those are useful ingredients for a tense espionage story: divided loyalties, dangerous information, and an escape plan that may depend on a powerful adversary.

But the published story outline also points toward a drama more interested in what made Diana than in the mechanics of each operation. She investigates her parents’ deaths and her earlier training, while the Zani family’s internal relationships add another layer of conflict. The premise supplies danger and political maneuvering; it does not, by itself, establish that those elements escalate into consistently gripping suspense. The title’s “lacks thrills” judgment is therefore best understood as a critical reading of the show’s balance, not an objective fact settled by the synopsis.
Why does the family history matter?
Diana’s past is not an unrelated subplot: it connects her work as a spy to the personal cost of being trained to suppress her identity. In English, Gardini says Diana has been trained to suppress what makes people unique, and that her journey across the six episodes is to reclaim her identity. The interview in EL PAÍS frames the season as a character journey as much as a spy story.

The same interview records De Angelis describing the contrast she plays: “Por un lado, hay una Diana casi adolescente, juvenil y pura, y por otro una mujer determinada, una máquina para la guerra que está obsesionada con la verdad”. She presents Diana as both youthful and determined—a “war machine” obsessed with truth. That contrast helps explain why the series’ emotional material may take precedence over action-forward thrills: the central tension is not only whether Diana can get out, but what sort of person she can be after years inside Manticore.
How do action and character drama fit together?
The episode summaries place missions and weapons alongside bereavement, earlier training, Diana’s relationship with Gabriele, and conflict among the Zanis. In principle, those strands can strengthen each other: a mission can expose the personal history shaping Diana’s choices, while family loyalties can make factional intrigue more than a tactical puzzle.

The trade-off is emphasis. Readers looking for a tightly escalating sequence of spy operations may find the published outline weighted toward emotional revelations and interpersonal conflict. Readers drawn to a protagonist negotiating identity, trust, and inherited violence may see those same elements as the point rather than a detour. The available descriptions establish the ingredients, but cannot settle how smoothly the episodes balance them in execution.
Is it accessible without watching the original Citadel?
The series is identified as an Italian-language chapter of the Citadel universe, and its premise depends on the destruction of that agency by Manticore. That is the key franchise context needed to understand Diana’s infiltration and the stakes of her possible escape. The official synopsis does not establish that a newcomer must know additional plot details from the original series, so the premise appears legible on its own while remaining connected to a larger universe.

What did critics and viewers think?
Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 82% Tomatometer from 11 reviews and a 64% Popcornmeter from 50+ ratings when retrieved on October 4, 2026. These are dated platform snapshots, not permanent scores or a representative audience study. The critic consensus calls the show “A superb step-up in the Citadel universe,” praising Diana’s spycraft and De Angelis, while the listing also includes qualified reactions, such as The Age critic Craig Mathieson calling it “a decent side piece.” The gap between the two displayed scores suggests a more favorable critical than audience response in that snapshot, not unanimity on either side. Rotten Tomatoes’ season page carries the changing scores and review listings.
