Yes. Beverly D’Angelo says she improvised Ellen Griswold’s hand gesture in the police “freeze” scene of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. She told Chevy Chase what she planned before the take; the actor says it was the day’s last shot, and the take made it into the 1989 film.
What happens in the freeze scene?
Near the end of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, police order the Griswold family to freeze. As Ellen, played by D’Angelo, puts her hand over Clark’s crotch, played by Chase. D’Angelo later explained the joke as protecting the “family jewels.”
In a December 2023 interview with Forbes, D’Angelo said the gesture was her idea, not a scripted action. She recalled telling Chase: “When they say ‘Freeze’, I’m going to put my hand down like I’m protecting the family jewels.”
Why did the gesture stay in the movie?
D’Angelo said the shoot was running late and there was time for only one take. Chase cautioned her, “Well, you can’t do that.” She recalled that they went ahead, the director called wrap, and the take was retained: “And so we did it. That’s a wrap for the day. And I had to stay in it because that was the only shot that they had.”

Those details are D’Angelo’s recollection; the accounts cited here do not independently verify the production schedule or take count. Her explanation is that the gesture remained in the released film because the crew used that final take.
Why might viewers miss it at first?
D’Angelo said the joke was designed to be easy to overlook: attention, she reasoned, would be on the expressions of Chase and Randy Quaid rather than on her hand. “When you first look at it, you aren’t looking at what I’m doing down there,” she told Forbes. She also observed that viewers had begun noticing the gesture more in recent years, which she attributed to watching the film on larger home screens. That is her impression, not a measured audience finding.

How the story has been retold
Forbes published D’Angelo’s detailed account in December 2023. Fox News Digital later reported the same central claim—that the moment was improvised and filmed in one take. In January 2026, Parade recapped the anecdote and referenced a new Entertainment Tonight interview. The versions do not establish a competing account; the underlying explanation remains D’Angelo’s own recollection.
