Eddie Redmayne’s Emcee is the magnetic center of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, Rebecca Frecknall’s immersive Broadway revival. The production’s transformed theatre and club-like pre-show make the evening unusually enveloping; its extremes can also pull attention away from the musical’s story. The engagement closed September 21, 2025, so this is a retrospective review, not a guide to a currently running Broadway show.

What made the revival feel like a night at the Kit Kat Club

Rather than leave the audience in a conventional auditorium, the production turned the August Wilson Theatre into the Kit Kat Club. The venue and the performance began working on the audience before the musical proper: pre-show entertainment established a cabaret atmosphere, so entering the theatre felt like crossing into the show’s world. That immersive frame is a central part of the production’s appeal, not just decoration around the stage action.

It is also a demanding choice. The club atmosphere can make the evening feel immediate and decadent, but theatrical excess is not automatically dramatic focus. The question is whether the spectacle sharpens the story’s unease or competes with it. Contemporary critics disagreed, with some praising the revival’s detail and edge while others objected to its extended prologue, its extremity, or the fit between the staging and Joe Masteroff’s book.

Redmayne’s Emcee is the revival’s biggest attraction

As the opening-cast Emcee, Redmayne makes a vivid argument for the production’s heightened style. His performance is designed to hold the room: watchful, strange, and capable of turning the club’s invitation into something more unsettling. The role is not merely a host introducing songs; it gives the evening a figure who can make pleasure feel precarious. Redmayne’s presence helps the theatrical world cohere, even when the staging threatens to overwhelm the narrative.

That force is a matter of interpretation, not a universal verdict. BroadwayWorld’s roundup of contemporary reviews records both enthusiasm for Redmayne and reservations about the production’s scale and tone. The response is best understood as a genuine divide over what this Cabaret should prioritize: immersive sensation or restraint in service of the book.

Gayle Rankin’s Sally Bowles anchors the human stakes

Gayle Rankin played Sally Bowles in the opening cast, opposite Redmayne. Sally’s ambition, vulnerability, and self-invention give the musical an intimate counterweight to the club’s spectacle. The more the production surrounds her with elaborate atmosphere, the more important it is that her choices remain legible as human choices rather than merely another part of the event. Rankin’s performance was among the elements highlighted in contemporary responses, though critics did not agree on the balance the overall staging struck.

How the staging serves—and sometimes challenges—the musical

The creative team made the production’s scale integral to its identity: Frecknall directed, Tom Scutt designed the production, and Julia Cheng choreographed it. Scutt’s scenic work earned the 2024 Tony Award for Best Scenic Design of a Musical. The transformation gives the songs a setting with a strong point of view, and the audience-facing club environment makes spectacle feel close at hand rather than safely framed at a distance.

The trade-off is that an immersive evening can become a long evening. Broadway.com listed the running time as approximately 2 hours 45 minutes, including one 15-minute intermission. Some critics found the extended prologue and excesses thrilling; others felt the staging’s ambitions strained its relationship with Masteroff’s book. That tension is not a minor footnote—it is the clearest way to understand why the production can be dazzling and divisive at once.

The musical behind the club

Cabaret has a book by Joe Masteroff, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb. It is based on John Van Druten’s play and stories by Christopher Isherwood. The score includes “Wilkommen,” “Don’t Tell Mama,” “Mein Herr,” “Maybe This Time,” “Money,” and the title number. Those songs provide the familiar pleasures, while the musical’s personal relationships and political unease give the club atmosphere its stakes.

Frecknall’s revival is most compelling when those elements reinforce each other: the seduction of performance and the discomfort underneath it. When the staging’s sensory force takes precedence, the evening risks making atmosphere feel like its own destination. That push and pull is the production’s defining quality, not a simple flaw that can be separated from its ambition.

What reviewers and audiences said

Contemporary critical response was mixed rather than unanimous. BroadwayWorld’s April 2024 roundup includes praise for Redmayne and the production’s detailed, edgy qualities, alongside criticism of its length, excess, and relationship to the book. Broadway.com relayed Variety critic Naveen Kumar’s description, “A hot-ticket escape. A ravishing, gut-punching, timely revival,” and Entertainment Weekly critic Emlyn Travis’s “An unforgettable and jaw-dropping experience.” These are attributed critical reactions, not a consensus claim.

Broadway.com displayed an audience rating of 4.7 out of 5 from 391 verified customer reviews when accessed October 4, 2026. That figure is time-sensitive and distinct from critics’ responses; it should be read as a snapshot of the listing, not an enduring measure of the production.

Broadway run and practical details

The production’s official title was Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club. It played the August Wilson Theatre, with previews beginning April 1, 2024, an opening on April 20, 2024, and a closing date of September 21, 2025. Broadway.com listed the address as 245 West 52nd Street, a running time of approximately 2 hours 45 minutes with one 15-minute intermission, and recommended the show for ages 13 and up. These are historical details for the Broadway engagement; they do not establish whether a separate licensed production is available elsewhere.

Verdict: a thrilling transformation with a real trade-off

Redmayne dazzles because the revival gives him a world built for theatrical command—and because his Emcee makes that world feel unstable as well as seductive. Rankin supplies an important human counterpoint, while the transformed theatre and pre-show deepen the sense of entering a different space. But the production’s immersive ambition can crowd the book and stretch the evening. This is a bold, memorable revival whose excess is inseparable from its appeal, and whose divided reception makes sense once spectacle and story are weighed together.
