Bridgerton Season 3 uses costume as character storytelling: Penelope leaves behind the citrus colors associated with her earlier wardrobe, Colin adopts a travel-worn earthiness, and the contrasting looks of Kate, Eloise, Francesca, and Cressida reveal their own shifts and tensions. The clothes mix Regency references with modern materials and heightened fantasy, so they are best understood as Regency-inspired rather than historically exact.
What inspires the Season 3 costumes?
Lead costume designer John Glaser said the team wanted the clothes to feel new rather than repeat the first two seasons: “We wanted it to look fresh and different from season one and season two, not go back.” Color is central to that change. In an interview with Shondaland, Glaser describes a more subtle, mysterious visual language, shaped by layered fabrics, sequins, netting, florals, and sparkle. Flower gardens also informed the palette.
In Vogue, Glaser calls the season’s approach “softer” and “more textural.” Warm and cool shades overlap, making a garment’s color difficult to pin down: it might read as blue or green depending on how its layers catch the eye. That ambiguity lets clothes contribute to the story without announcing what a character’s next move will be.
How each character’s wardrobe tells a story
Penelope Featherington: a palette moving beyond citrus
Penelope’s first ball look trades the citrus colors associated with her earlier wardrobe for emerald and tulle. Her later looks move through green and blue-green into softer neutrals. For one dramatic reveal, a green-and-copper underlayer blends with her hair, creating a layered effect rather than a single, declarative color.

The change is also in the silhouette. Glaser says he dropped the empire waist and moved Penelope’s line forward to 1817. Her clothes therefore signal a new presentation of herself through both color and shape.
Colin Bridgerton: travel-worn and less polished
Colin’s earth tones, long coats, open shirts, denim trousers, belt, and riding boots give him a rugged, worldly appearance after his travels. The mix is intentional: Glaser describes the look as partly period-correct and partly modern. Shondaland notes that the riding boots deliberately breach period etiquette, making them a character choice rather than a claim of strict historical accuracy.
Kate Bridgerton: sari-influenced movement and spice tones
Kate’s gowns draw more overtly on Indian references than her Season 2 wardrobe. Sari-influenced flow and spice-inspired earth tones give her looks a distinct visual identity within the Ton. The references shape the garments’ movement and palette rather than making them literal historical replicas.
Eloise Bridgerton: tailored Regency with screen-star references
Eloise’s tailored looks combine bows and ruffles, softening the silhouette without removing its structured quality. Glaser cites Audrey Hepburn and My Fair Lady as inspirations, while pointed modern shoes add a contemporary detail.

Francesca Bridgerton: a family echo in her presentation gown
Francesca’s presentation gown is described as a copy of Daphne’s Season 1 gown, giving it the feel of a family heirloom. Later looks draw on Grace Kelly and Katharine Hepburn, bringing a different screen-inspired elegance to her wardrobe.
Cressida Cowper: clothes that make confinement visible
Cressida’s exaggerated shoulders and sleeves turn her clothes into an expression of isolation. Glaser said, “We were trying to say she’s entrapped, so we thought, ‘Let’s entrap her in her clothes.’” Assistant costume designer George Sayer called her crimson dress in episode seven “a ‘F–k you’ dress.”

Queen Charlotte: a coordinated swan motif
Queen Charlotte’s Swan Lake-themed wig, which has a motor, was created by hair and makeup designer Erika Ökvist. Glaser says the costume team followed the feathered motif, carrying the theme from hair into the clothing.

They are a deliberate blend of historical reference and fantasy, not a documentary record of Regency dress. Netflix Tudum’s guide to the show’s Regency inspiration identifies period grounding in elements such as silhouettes, stays, watch fobs, parasols, and some hairstyles. It also notes departures, including heightened color and the omission of traditional bonnets. The guide’s historians explain that many day dresses were white or more muted, though brighter colors did exist; the vivid palette on screen should not be taken as a universal picture of what people wore.

Season 3’s own design commentary makes the mixture explicit. Colin’s denim trousers and modern shoes sit alongside period-inspired styling, while Glaser has said, “There’s always going to be a sleeve or a waistline that have Regency influences.” He also told Netflix Tudum, “I don’t necessarily think accurate is always right.” Fashion historian and FIT adjunct instructor Raissa Bretaña describes the series as “a show that borders on historical fantasy.”
A useful way to read the fashion
Rather than judging an outfit as simply accurate or inaccurate, consider what it does for the character and how its visual choices create that effect:
Quick Recap
- Story function: What change, relationship, or tension does the outfit signal?
- Palette and texture: How do color, layering, and surface details shape its mood?
- Silhouette and materials: Which features evoke period dress, and which introduce modernity?
