Blue Moon turns one fraught evening into a portrait of artistic displacement: on the night Richard Rodgers celebrates Oklahoma!, his former songwriting partner Lorenz Hart watches a new chapter begin without him. Ethan Hawke gives the film its unsettled pulse, shifting between wit and vulnerability in a confined, dialogue-driven drama. The result is a character study, not a documentary record of what happened that night.
What is Blue Moon about?
Directed by Richard Linklater and written by Robert Kaplow, Blue Moon is set on March 31, 1943, the opening night of Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s Oklahoma!. Hart, Rodgers’s former lyric-writing partner, spends the evening at Sardi’s Restaurant as the musical’s success puts the end of their collaboration into sharper focus. Sony Pictures Classics describes the story as unfolding primarily at Sardi’s; Sony’s UK synopsis emphasizes Hart’s shattered self-confidence against Rodgers’s celebration of his new hit. Sony Pictures Classics’ announcement and the official film synopsis establish the central situation.
The premise gives the film a useful dramatic pressure point: Hart is surrounded by people who know what he has contributed, yet Rodgers’s new partnership with Hammerstein makes his absence from the future feel immediate. The film’s tension comes less from a chain of events than from watching Hart try to preserve his place in a world that has begun moving on.
Does the one-night setting keep the film moving?
The largely single-location, single-evening structure makes conversation carry the momentum. Rather than relying on a succession of settings or plot turns, the film keeps returning to Hart’s changing relations with the people around him and to the mismatch between his quickness and his insecurity. BFI’s review and Film at Lincoln Center both characterize it as a one-night portrait, a form that places particular weight on performance and dialogue. BFI’s review and Film at Lincoln Center’s description provide that framing.

That containment is the film’s defining strength and its main risk. It allows small shifts in tone to matter, but it also means the drama depends on whether Hart’s exchanges keep revealing something new rather than simply circling his pain. Linklater’s approach treats the restaurant less as a backdrop for spectacle than as a social arena: the more Hart performs his brilliance, the more visible the hurt beneath it becomes.
How is Ethan Hawke as Lorenz Hart?
Hawke’s performance is built around contrast. He gives Hart a nimble verbal presence and comic timing, then lets charm falter into defensiveness and self-doubt. Those shifts make the character more than a vessel for clever lines: the performance suggests how wit can be both a genuine gift and a way to control a room when one’s standing in it feels precarious. BFI’s coverage likewise foregrounds Hawke’s transformation and acting, while the film’s format makes that work central to its effect. BFI’s interview coverage.
Rank #2
Hawke’s charisma should not be mistaken for an endorsement of Hart’s conduct. The film invites interest in a talented, wounded man without requiring the audience to excuse every way he handles that wound. Andrew Scott’s Rodgers offers a counterweight: their history gives the evening intimacy, while Rodgers’s new success makes the distance between them impossible to ignore. Margaret Qualley and Bobby Cannavale are also among the film’s principal cast. Sony Pictures Classics’ announcement.
Is Blue Moon based on a true story?
It is based on real people and a real historical context, but it is a dramatized character portrait, not a documentary transcript. The setting is the fictionalized dramatic evening of March 31, 1943, when Oklahoma! opened and Rodgers was beginning a celebrated new collaboration with Hammerstein. The Associated Press reports that Kaplow drew on real correspondence between Hart and Elizabeth Weiland. That correspondence is an inspiration for the screenplay; it does not establish that every scene or line reproduces a verifiable event. Associated Press review.

Accordingly, the film is best approached as an interpretation of Hart’s emotional predicament, not as a source for the exact chronology or wording of his conversations. The available accounts establish the correspondence as a basis for the script, but do not verify individual scenes as historical fact.
Do you need to know Oklahoma! to watch it?
No. The film explains the essential contrast: Rodgers is celebrating a successful new musical with Hammerstein, while Hart is confronting the loss of his former partnership and creative role. Knowing Oklahoma! helps convey the scale of Rodgers’s new achievement, but the emotional stakes are clear without prior familiarity with the show. Sony Pictures Classics’ announcement.
Rank #4
The most useful context is simply that Rodgers and Hart had been collaborators and that Rodgers’s work with Hammerstein marks a new phase. The film’s focus is not a musical-history lesson; it is the personal cost Hart perceives in that change.

Blue Moon is a good fit for viewers drawn to performance-led dramas, creative partnerships, and stories about the unstable boundary between public acclaim and private insecurity. Its conversational, contained design is also a natural draw for anyone interested in Linklater’s character-centered filmmaking. Viewers seeking a documentary or a comprehensive account of Rodgers and Hart’s careers should keep the film’s scope in mind: it concentrates on a single dramatic evening rather than attempting a full biography.
