Spoilers for all eight episodes of Netflix’s Black Rabbit. Vince dies in the finale: after confessing to police, he jumps from the Black Rabbit’s roof. Jake survives. The creators frame Vince’s death as a deliberate sacrifice to help his brother, but it does not restore the restaurant or erase the grief and damage the brothers leave behind.

What happens to Jake and Vince?

At the Black Rabbit, Vince tells Jake that he killed their abusive father as a child by dropping a bowling ball on him. Jake says he witnessed it and already knew. The admission reveals a secret at the center of their shared past, but it does not absolve either brother of the harm they have caused in the present.

The brothers are also facing the consequences of the robbery. Jake had first devised it as a way to erase Vince’s debt to Mancuso, then called it off after fixer Campbell offered money in exchange for deleting footage of Jules drugging bartender Anna. Vince later took part in the robbery with Junior and killed him to save Jake. By the finale, both the police and Mancuso are after them. TIME’s finale breakdown details the robbery’s role in the brothers’ crisis.

Before jumping, Vince calls the police and confesses to his role in the robbery and Wes’s murder. He then tells Jake, “I owe you a jump,” and leaps from the roof. Vince dies; Jake lives.

Why does Vince jump?

The creators describe the death as a sacrifice, not a last-minute twist. Co-creator Kate Susman says Vince sees one way to help Jake and chooses it: “We wanted to show that his journey was to actually become selfless or to say, ‘I really can only see one way to help my brother at this moment,’ and he does it.” Netflix’s official finale explainer also connects the roof and Vince’s line to the show’s earlier history between the brothers.

Co-creator Zach Baylin told TheWrap that the sacrifice was part of the ending from the project’s pitch onward, even before the creators settled on the roof as its location. That intention gives Vince’s final act emotional meaning, but it does not turn it into a clean solution: he dies, the Black Rabbit is lost, and Jake is left to grieve.

What happens to Jake after Vince’s death?

Mancuso arrives expecting revenge. When he learns Vince is dead, he embraces Jake and leaves. The scene ends the immediate threat from Mancuso’s family, while Vince’s confession changes Jake’s immediate situation with the police. The finale does not establish that every legal or criminal consequence is permanently settled.

In the closing scenes, Jake takes his son to school and works behind the bar at another restaurant instead of returning to the Black Rabbit. Susman sums up the shift simply: “Jake moves on.” The show loops back to the first episode’s image of Jake getting ready in the bathroom, but the routine now belongs to a smaller, altered life. He has a chance to begin again, though not the brother or business that once defined him. Netflix’s account of the epilogue describes this as Jake moving forward without carrying the brothers’ past in the same way.

What the ending says about the brothers

Vince’s final choice is selfless, but it does not erase the chaos and violence that brought the brothers to the roof. Jake, meanwhile, has often seemed like the controlled one. Jason Bateman cautions against taking that appearance at face value: “One’s a screwup, and the other is much more buttoned-up — or is better at hiding his dysfunction.” His and Jude Law’s discussion of the brothers underscores that Jake is compromised too, even if he presents himself differently.

The tragedy is therefore not that one brother is simply good and the other bad. Vince’s death gives Jake a way out of the immediate crisis, but it costs him the person with whom he shared the history behind it. Jake’s new routine hints at a different future; it does not suggest that the past has been undone.
