Mel Gibson called Robert Downey Jr.’s support “a bold and generous and kind gesture.” He was describing Downey’s public appeal at the 2011 American Cinematheque Awards for Hollywood to forgive Gibson after his 2006 DUI arrest and the antisemitic remarks associated with it. Gibson recounted the moment in an Esquire profile published April 8, 2024; his words describe a meaningful act of support, not proof that Downey single-handedly restored his career.
What did Robert Downey Jr. do for Mel Gibson?
At the 2011 American Cinematheque Awards, Downey used his speech to ask Hollywood to give Gibson a chance to move forward. As Esquire quoted him, Downey urged the audience to consider “forgiving my friend his trespasses, offering him the same clean slate you have given me, and allowing him to continue his great and ongoing contribution to our collective art without shame.”
Downey’s appeal was public and personal: he called Gibson his friend and asked the industry to extend the kind of forgiveness he said he had received. The two had co-starred in the 1990 film Air America, and Esquire describes a friendship marked by mutual support.
Why was Gibson facing backlash?
Gibson was arrested for DUI in Malibu in 2006. Accounts of the arrest reported that he made drunken antisemitic remarks. The episode brought serious public and professional fallout; Gibson later described his position to Esquire as, “I’m the poster boy for canceled.”

- All Movie Guide - As the foundation of the Mayan civilization begins to crumble, one man's previously idyllic existence is forever changed when he is chosen as a sacrifice needed to appease the gods in director Mel Gibson's mythic, end-times adventure. That context matters: Downey was asking Hollywood to reconsider its treatment of a friend after a consequential incident, not intervening in an unspecified career setback. His speech did not erase the remarks or make them inconsequential; it called for forgiveness and the opportunity to keep working.
Why did Gibson call the gesture “bold and generous”?
In Ryan D’Agostino’s Esquire profile, published April 8, 2024, Gibson looked back on Downey’s defense and said, “It was a bold and generous and kind gesture. I loved him for that.” The phrase is Gibson’s retrospective description of the 2011 speech.

Variety and The Jerusalem Post published accounts the following day based on the Esquire interview. Esquire remains the original source for Gibson’s recollection and the quoted exchange.

“Saved him from getting canceled” is a dramatic shorthand for Gibson’s account of Downey’s support, not an established claim that Downey alone restored his career. The documented action is narrower: Downey publicly urged Hollywood to forgive Gibson and let him continue contributing to film. Variety noted that Gibson’s career did not return to its former peak, while reporting later work including Hacksaw Ridge. The available accounts do not establish that Downey’s speech by itself caused those later opportunities.
