Denzel Washington’s involvement first came to light in a November 2024 interview, when he said director Ryan Coogler was writing a part for him; later reporting described Coogler as confirming Washington would appear. Washington’s character has not been disclosed.
How Washington’s involvement became public
The news began with Washington, not a Marvel casting announcement. In remarks on Australia’s Today show, reported by the Los Angeles Times on November 12, 2024, he said: “After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next ‘Black Panther.’ After that, I’m going to do the film ‘Othello.’ After that, I’m going to do King Lear. After that, I’m going to retire.”
At the time, Marvel had not announced a third film and declined to comment on Washington’s remarks. In June 2025, an interview description for the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast said Coogler confirmed Washington would appear. TheWrap’s later coverage also recalled Washington’s disclosure and Coogler’s subsequent confirmation. Neither account identifies Washington’s character.
What Marvel announced about the film
At its San Diego Comic-Con Hall H presentation on July 25, 2026, Marvel officially confirmed the third Black Panther film and set its theatrical release for December 15, 2028, according to The Associated Press. Marvel also announced David Jonsson as T’Challa’s son and the new Black Panther.

Jonsson’s casting continues the story introduced in Wakanda Forever
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) introduced T’Challa’s son, providing the continuity behind Jonsson’s casting. The Associated Press reported that the 2018 Black Panther earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide and that Wakanda Forever earned $850 million. Those are the figures given in the AP’s 2026 report.
What is still unknown about Washington’s role
The available reporting establishes that Washington is expected to appear, but does not state whom he will play, how large the part is, or what function the character will serve in the story. The announcement of Jonsson as the new Black Panther is a separate casting detail; it does not reveal how Washington’s role relates to him or to T’Challa’s son.
