Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is most enjoyable when Eddie Murphy is back in Axel Foley’s fast-talking, rule-bending element. It is also a sequel that leans hard on the original films’ music, faces and familiar rhythms. That affection gives the movie much of its pleasure—and makes its reliance on nostalgia hard to miss.
What is Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F about?
Axel Foley returns to Beverly Hills after his daughter, Jane (Taylour Paige), is threatened. They team up with a new partner, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and familiar allies Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to investigate a conspiracy. Netflix’s Tudum feature also names Paul Reiser, Bronson Pinchot and Kevin Bacon among the cast.

That setup gives the sequel a family stake alongside its police investigation, but the film’s central attraction is still Foley himself. The story brings him back to the setting and company that made the character famous, rather than asking viewers to discover a wholly new version of him.
Does Eddie Murphy still make Axel Foley work?
Murphy’s return is the movie’s strongest reason to watch. Axel’s irreverence and comic timing are the engine of the series, and the sequel understands that the character’s appeal lies as much in how he moves through a scene as in the case he is trying to solve. Returning cast members help restore the familiar group dynamic, while Paige and Gordon-Levitt give Axel new people to bounce off.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer praised Murphy’s range in an interview with Netflix Tudum: “Eddie’s such an incredible artist. He can do drama, he can do comedy –– he can do anything.” That is a producer’s endorsement, not a neutral verdict, but the film’s bet on Murphy’s charisma is plain—and more persuasive than any claim that the franchise has reinvented itself.
How much does the film rely on nostalgia?
A great deal. In his July 2, 2024 review for the Los Angeles Times, Glenn Whipp reads the sequel as a carefully calibrated trip back to the 1980s, arguing that its revival strategy is, in effect, to make the first film again. He points to the Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer Films logo and the sax riff from “The Heat Is On” as early signals of that approach.

The callbacks are not limited to music and imagery. The movie returns to a recognizable pattern: a Detroit opening chase, Axel pushing past the rules, an angry superior and a move to Beverly Hills after people close to him are endangered. That repetition can feel like a welcome reunion if the old formula is what you came for. If you want a legacy sequel to put new characters or a more surprising plot first, it can feel overfamiliar instead.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus captures the same tension: it describes the film as coasting on nostalgia while welcoming Axel Foley’s return. Individual reviews on the page range from pleasure in Murphy’s comeback to criticism of the predictable plot and familiar formula. The consensus and selected reviews are critical perspectives, not a guarantee of how every viewer will respond.

Is Axel F worth watching?
Watch it for Murphy’s return and the pleasure of spending time with Axel and his old allies again. The film’s familiar touches are part of its design, not a surprise detour; whether they land as affectionate or excessive will depend on how much you want the sequel to revisit the series’ past.
For viewers who want a fresh direction or a mystery that can stand entirely on its own, the predictable structure may be a drawback. Axel F is better understood as a reunion built around a familiar franchise rhythm than as a reinvention of the action comedy.
