It works best as a collection of hard-hitting set pieces, not as a story with the same pull as the franchise that surrounds it.
What is Ballerina about?
Directed by Len Wiseman and written by Shay Hatten, Ballerina follows Eve Macarro, played by Ana de Armas, a young woman trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma assassin network. After her father is killed, Eve pursues revenge. The film was released in U.S. theaters on June 6, 2025, according to the official film site.
The premise gives the film a clear engine, but not a particularly distinctive one: Eve is driven by loss, and the plot repeatedly returns to the question of how much violence she can endure and inflict. That simplicity leaves the action to do much of the work of sustaining interest.
Does the action make up for the story?
Often, though not consistently. De Armas brings visible physical commitment to the fights, and the choreography provides the film’s strongest moments. The action can be inventive and deliberately brutal, giving Eve a presence that the screenplay does not always supply. TIME also praises her action skills and costume detail, while The Atlantic acknowledges her screen presence and commitment even as it criticizes the story.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The film is less successful at making those fights feel like steps in an emotionally compelling journey. TIME faults the plot mechanics and Eve’s characterization; The Atlantic argues that the first two acts resemble a generic revenge thriller and a Wick imitation. When the story feels familiar, a well-staged fight can entertain without giving the next one much added weight.
Where the film finds its own flavor
Not every stretch is simply a replay of the main series. In its review, Associated Press critic Jocelyn Noveck highlights surprises and humor in the early mountain-town sequences, describing the Austrian settlement as a place where every inhabitant is a killer. Those touches offer a welcome change of texture, even if they do not resolve the film’s larger problem of making Eve feel fully developed.

Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed critics consensus praises de Armas’s choreography-driven action and calls the origin story “pleasingly kooky.” That is an aggregator’s summary, not a verdict shared by every reviewer: TIME and The Atlantic are notably less impressed by the story’s strength and distinctiveness.
How does it compare with the John Wick films?
Ballerina occupies the same criminal world, but its connection to the franchise is both an asset and a burden. The setting supplies the Ruska Roma, an established assassin hierarchy, and a ready-made network of rules. The official site recommends John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 for background on that world. The plot is designed to stand alone, but prior knowledge helps the institutions and relationships carry more meaning.

Chronologically, the film takes place during the period of Chapter 3, between the events of Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, according to TIME and the Associated Press. That placement helps it fit into the franchise timeline, but it does not give Eve’s revenge story the same narrative weight as the central films. The familiar mythology makes the world easy to enter for returning viewers; it also invites comparisons the spin-off cannot always meet.
| What to compare | How Ballerina fares |
|---|---|
| Action and visual invention | De Armas’s physical performance and the choreography are major strengths, with occasional surprises and tonal shifts. |
| Revenge story | The motive is clear, but TIME and The Atlantic find the plot mechanics or setup too familiar to create much intrigue. |
| Protagonist | Eve is convincing in motion; TIME’s criticism of her characterization points to the gap between action presence and fuller development. |
| Franchise setting | The Ruska Roma and assassin hierarchy add context, but the connection can make the film feel derivative rather than essential. |
| Place in the series | Its Chapter 3-era timeline fits around the main films without giving the spin-off the same narrative importance. |
Do you need to watch John Wick first?
No. The revenge plot can be followed on its own, and the official site presents the film as a standalone story. But if you want the Ruska Roma and the assassin hierarchy to register as more than unfamiliar franchise lore, watching Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 first provides useful background. The film’s position during the Chapter 3 period also makes those installments the most relevant context.

Is Ballerina worth watching?
It is worth considering if inventive, punishing action and de Armas’s performance matter more to you than a fresh revenge narrative. Viewers looking for the tightly compelling character journey that drives the strongest John Wick stories may find this one comparatively thin. Its best stretches demonstrate why Eve belongs in this world; its weaker ones leave her story feeling like an accessory to it.
